Windbreak Placement Strategy

Is there a "golden rule"?

Trying to protect a gazebo from the wind, should the windbreak be a certain distance away, half its height, twice its height, at an angle to the wind, wrapping round?

Or am I over-thinking it!?

Next time the missus asks me what I get up to on PH I can tell her I am just discussing windbreak placement strategy!!
