Hi All,

I have a Tag Carrera watch which is my office office. The SS strap is too uncomfortable and heavy. Looking to get a Breitling with a leather strap as an everyday watch. I am hoping to pass it down to my son when he's older.

I have a couple of concerns.

1. It's not as special as a Rolex, hence the pass-me-down might not be that great. I hear Breitling dont particularly hold value.
2. The croc leather is suppose to limited in life. They cost £440 to replace, so I was quoted by a Breitling rep at Westfield Shopping centre.
3. The initial purchase price is £6k! Thats a huge amount of cash for something that doesnt hold value. Any ideas what I can discount these down to? Anyone know how much these can be haggled down?

If you have those concerns then, why bother?

That's a lot of money if you don't think it's amazing plus it has a leather strap which won't last that long, depending on the climate.

I have an old navitimer that I haven't worn for over 12 years. I won't sell it, as it has sentimental value, but they're big old watches with quite a busy face, you could go off it very easily.

Mine came with a basic leather strap and mine never lasted (in high humidity) longer than two years. In the end I bought a bracelet which at the time was hugely expensive at around £300 the basic leather straps were £50 in the UK. (Back in the late '90s)

I like the watch. It looks great.

I am not a watch man so I know nothing about them to be honest. Just need some views on those in the know.

It is a lot of money however I dont mind if I know it's going to be great pass-me-down to my son. Dont want to spend 6k now and for it to worth 40% or less in a few years.

Nothing very special about the Rolex name, imo, so you should choose a watch you like, not something your son might be impressed with in 10-15-20 years time...

He and you might love a particular Rolex, but not just ANY Rolex (or any other brand, imo).

It's true that, short-term, Breitlings don't hold their value like Rolexes, but if you look longer term, that might not be the case.

Of course, if you like a Rolex too, then choose the one you like best!

Personally, I'd rather wear a Navitimer than any Rolex, but that's me smile

I bought my Navitimer on holiday in Cancun.

After haggling with the dealer and due to exchange rate and tax refund you get in Mexico I picked it up for around £4k all in.

I certainly wouldn't be looking to buy it from Beaverbrooks.

I doubt that £4k is achievable in the UK, but you could buy a trip to Cancun and pick up your watch from there for less than the high street price

You'll probably get a grand of that watch if you haggle well. I have Breitling Navitimer World in blue with a leather strap that I've had for 4 years that u rotate with another watch and the leather strap has loads of life left in it. I think the crocodile straps are softer and not as hard wearing. As above if you'd like it buy it. None of the Rolex range really excite me accept for the Daytona.

For a 'family heirloom' pass me down watch in the £6k bracket it has to be a Rolex Submariner surely?

How old is your son? I'm guessing you could quite easily pick up a birth year watch for him now - well under £6k and this would have even more sentimental value as the years go on.

As timeless as watches go a date or non-date black steel Sub is as iconic as they come!!

Shirley, if it's a keeper for the purposes of being a hand-me-down then perhaps whether or not it retains some decent value is basically an irrelevance, is it not? If I were you I'd be looking at a more classic design rather than the lovely, but very subjective look, of the Navitimer. Before I started getting into buying watches I was seriously in love with the Navitimer but when I found out it wasn't water resistant to any real degree (3 atm I think) I couldn't see the point of having one as I don't generally take my watches off (except for the Dornbluth). Since then I have gone off the Navitimer as I now find it too busy and confusing. You, or your son, may feel the same and your £6k will have been invested poorly. Ignore the resale values, buy a more classic style of watch.

I am agreeing with a lot of the above sentiment. I think a more classic time-piece might be a better way to go so its the Rolex might be better.

For me it's got to be a Navitimer. I would suggest you try a Rolex and Navitimer on. I tried both and the Navitimer feels proper where the Rolex don't do it for me. Also there so many other manufacturers that are a rip off design of a Rolex. I might buy a Submariner in the future as Im a James Bond nut and into my diving.

I bought my Navitimer from Beaverbrooks about 12 years ago, as I was a cash buyer, I got £800 off.
