So I recently left my job due to issues with one of the partners of the firm that I was working for, and am now in a situation where I'm struggling to get an interview or make any sort of progress when it comes finding a new job.

I've always had a job since I was about 14 (now 26) having worked in both retail (a former large sports store that went bust, and a well known high street chemist) whilst I was at college and university, and for the last couple of years since graduating with a degree in Business Management, Ive been working for a couple of accountancy firms.

Now due to the fact that I want to move away from the accountancy side of business, and would love to try and get into the marketing side instead, Ive been applying for all sorts of potential job roles that involve marketing in some shape or form so that I can gain some sort of experience that will help going forward in the future but I've heard either nothing, or that apparently I dont have the qualities they are looking for. Ive tried tailoring my CV to focus on the qualities that they are looking for but it really doesnt seem to make any difference in my success.

Slight desperation has meant that Ive been widening the range of roles that I have been applying for but its still the same situation. It seems like all the actual work experience, coupled with the Business degree counts for nothing to help me in today's job market.

Is there any advice anybody has, because at the moment I'm feeling a bit lost about this whole situation and really dont want to worry the girlfriend that Im actually starting to panic and stress out.

I would suggest initially getting a job back in retail as you already have experience. Do at least a year of hard graft before speaking to management about moving into marketing. Discuss this in your interview to see if it's viable and it will also show you are ambitious and have goals.

A company like John Lewis would be a good bet IMO.

Do you have any experience of marketing? I suspect you'll be competing with marketeers with a degree in marketing and as much experience in marketing as you have in accountancy. You could perhaps look at working for a smaller company using accountancy and similar skills where there is more opportunity to get involved in the marketing side of things. Perhaps a junior management role in a smaller company?

I managed to make the jump from web project management into marketing via a small company by proving that the skills I had were applicable in the marketing environment.

Some sound advice there.

Without knowing you much better, it's always going to be generalist advice you'll receive in this set up.

An option then is to consider a full review of your competencies and ambition and then work out if any gaps can be closed (through training or additional experience as mentioned above). Once that plan is in place, a full review of your CV (your own marketing brochure!) to ensure you are hitting the mark.

Happy to look over your CV as it stands and provide some feedback.

Good luck!
