Coherence - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2866360

OK, so I had this one recommended to me, it's interesting in a Twilight Zone / Outer Limits kind of way but its reliance on improvised dialogue made it difficult to watch.

It was made for about £30 and shot pretty much in a single room of a house, to make a sci-fi thriller this way was quite bold and sufficient to catch my attention.

We start with a bunch of friends who've come over for dinner, there's then a power cut which takes out the whole street, however there's a house up the road that still has power, when they go to investigate oddness occurs.

I found the dialogue a struggle as, everyone

has

a

a,

everyone, has a habit
of

Constantly the cast would speak in broken half-sentences and constantly interrupt each other to portray shock or anxiety and the endless exclaiming of 'Oh my god!' at every oh my god!! moment made me want to set fire to them after about 20 minutes which was a pity as one of the ladies in the film was particularly easy on the eye.

The lights go out, they panic, why?
There's a house up the road with lights on, they panic at the thought that this could happen, going over is considered dangerous, nothing really has happened at this point so there's no reason for the 'oh my gods', the notion that they could have a generator was deemed untrustworthy.
They then decide to start their generator, the guy that goes downstairs to start it was deemed a saviour, why they not in the middle of the woods, just at home in a modern house in a street that they know. Why was it then scary that the house up the road had lights? They're constantly panicking about very little.

So if they leave the house and go to the other they're back in the same house but a parallel universe version all with another copy of themselves there, it's also concluded that the copies of themselves are somehow evil twins although how they came to this conclusion isn't really explained. They do lots of little experiments that reminded me of the 80's TV show 'The Adventure Game', I was half hoping for someone to turn into a plant or face the vortex to get home.

The ending was classic Twilight Zone and was able to bring the daftness back on track but whilst it's commendable to attempt this for such a tiny budget and the idea itself wasn't awful it needed a bit of help with the script to make it less Am-Dram.

an Oh My God 4/10

It was pretty much all improvised, which may explain (if not excuse that). I thought the acting was solid, personally, one scene (the bit outside where she realises her partner has no idea what she is on about in particular was superbly executed.

For a $50k budget I thought it was brilliant film-making, lots of clever devices so the audience didn't get confused for the sake of it (Primer got dangerously close to this), which meant a potentially stupidly difficult to follow story held together quite well.

Time Lapse is also a good shout, for inventive-filmed-in-one-room-sci-fi.

The Babadook

First horror film I've watched in a long time that genuinely chilled me at times. Bizarre in places but really enjoyed it. 8/10

I enjoyed it too, but the kid's constant screaming almost ruined it for me.

I liked this, the kid was a challenge but as he was supposed to be a bit of a nightmare I was forced to let him off.

Not seen TL will go hunt down. As I said for the tiny budget I thought it was impressive but that doesn't dictate the need for so much improvisation, this for me spoiled it.

Not quite shot in a single room but did rely on a lot of improvisation I would recommend The Final Cut, thought it was really good - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162958

I'm with you on this, I gave it a punt a while back and I think I gave this a 6 tops including a point for an attempt at sci-fi and one extra for a low budget.

The only thing that made it coherent (no pun intended) was the use of glowsticks as not only a McGuffin but also as forced exposition to explain what the hell was going on.

It was a reasonably entertaining idea that needed more structure (and script) to make it work properly.

Am I missing the obvious in that like a lot of series these days they divided the final episode into two films, hence the fourth film of the trilogy.

Yes, I am surprised so many enjoyed it.

I was disappointed.

Inside Out - surprisingly enjoyable. OK it had a fair helping of American style sentimentality, but very well executed.

Predestination

Saw the twist coming, plus The female lead didn't convince me on her other roll in the film (no spoilers)
so a 6.3456/10 from me.

Whiplash

King Hearts and Coronets.

I recorded it over the weekend and watched it last night.

The best Ealing comedy. Arguably the best British comedy film.

The script is superb.

An hour and a half's pure joy.

It started with the Matrix sequals, and carried on with harry potter 7, the belief that you cant put a 800 page book inbto 1 2.5 hour film.

From what i am reading, while its good, theres a lot of filler, and the part 1 film could have been a fair bit shorter. Still enjoy it mind.

The Douglas Adams bit was in reference to the recurring numbering joke (a trilogy in 5 parts etc)

unfortunately 800 page novels don't fit in to 2.5 films, but they don't stretch to x2 2.5 films.

You either do a 3 to 3.5 single film, or x2 1h45 to 2h films.

I think one of the early mistakes made trying cram a book into one film and ruining it in the process was Dune, they had 2 films worth of footage, massive amounts of the book was filmed and cut, never ever to be seen even in special editions.
