Been playing AC Unity lately and it has got me thinking about what a good movie this series of games would make. Others that immediately spring to mind are Mass Effect and, of course, The Last of Us.

Apart from the Resident Evil movies (plus Silent Hill and a handful of others that I can't recall) why are not more games turned into a movie? Would they be deemed too niche or geeky?

Incidentally, what games would you like to see turned into a movie?

Ha! Ok, why aren't more games made into good movies?!

I'm sure that if a game with a deep story was used as opposed to it just being about action it could work well. Like the games I've mentioned, for example.

I have to admit I am a sad bd and will watch the films.

The new hitman film looks good. I am suprised world of witchcraft has'nt been filmalised yet, as there is a massive market east, same as starcraft.

That's why there's no movie; Blizzard won't sell the rights to it to anyone because it makes so much money as is. A st film could easily damage its reputation. See Uwe Boll for references laugh

There's a film coming, simply called 'Warcraft'

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0803096/

Personally it's difficult to make a movie out of a game as so many people play, connect and get attached to the main character in different ways, especially in games such as Mass Effect where you can play as either female or male (Femshep forever!) and shape the game and your relationship with your crew and squad in different ways. I would love to see a Mass Effect movie series (or TV miniseries but it would be very expensive) but I just know, without a shadow of a doubt, they'd cast a dude as Commander Shepherd when I only ever played as shepherd as a female character.

Probably because most films that are based on games stink ?

What game actually has a good plot that you can create a film from? I haven't played any.

Mass Effect has a more engrossing and well built and stylised universe than most Sci-Fi movies. The Halo universe also.

I've played a few that I've thought would make a great film but yeah the ones that have have been a bit rubbish (few exceptions aside).

The one I keep coming back to is Last of Us.

OK, take Mass Effect as an example.

This is why it wouldn't work as a film.

And Mass Effect is one of the few games made where the narrative is strong enough to carry a decent film if you could work out what the "true" narrative would be - you could make Call of Duty but the script would be:

Terrorists
{that weird WHOMP noise that's in lots of films these days}
Red Dot on chest
{WHOMP}
.50cal bullet in flight
{WHOMP}
Explosions
{WHOMP}
HOO-AH
{WHOMP. CCR's Fortunate Son plays.}
Everyone is in a helicopter smoking cigars

-FIN-

Which is no use to anybody.

The best video games are structured in a way that allow for multiple narratives, but that would be really hard to do in the time allowed in a film.

Remember being so excited when they announced a max payne film was being made, And then..... well we all know how that turned out. The game was a classic and the comic strip noir storytale was great. It would of been an excellent dub over film told like the game, But instead they turned it into some mythical crap/hollywood movie.
