Freelander 2 cooling fan permanently on

My dad has a 5 year old diesel FL2, and it seems that the cooling fan is permanently on.

I'm presuming a relay/sensor or something, but a quick Google doesn't suggest that there's a common problem.

Having never really worked on it before is there anything I can check easily, or is there a likely cause?
