im currently looking for the best gear box option for my s2, has anyone change it them selves and if so what is the best one to go for?

is this a job that can be done at home with out a huge workshop?

Is it possible? Yes.

Is it easy? No.

Would I do it? Probably, but I'd want some form of transjack. After the fun and games of fitting my diff - even using the extra height of hydraulic lifting ramps - I'd spend the time planning all I needed. Or going to Phazed's and using his lift.

Type 9 works well in the car with good ratios for the V6 so stick with that. The only problem is the location of the selector linkage. The housing can be modified easily - been done to fit the gearbox to Schimaters and MGs - bringing it to directly below the gaiter. Philpot has done this mod.

The final bits would be to renew the selector saddle for an uprated item and upgrade the mount for a harder version.

Couple of reads on the gearbox mod;

Hi Oliver,
What's wrong with the gearbox currently fitted? They are reasonably bullet proof, and the ratios are pretty good. What are you intending to use the car for?
For "enthusiastic" motoring, I would be looking at swapping the rear diff for a limited slip one before opting to change to a different gearbox.

What are you hoping to gain from a different gearbox?

I think it's the Mazda 6 speed that is popular in the "kit car world". Was a guy at Stoneleigh show/S Club 2015 selling various adapter plates, he had one for the older Ford Essex V6 but didn't see one for the Cologne.

If you need to ask................ wink

Standard g'box in and out can be done on your driveway, converting to something else would need a hugeworkshop cheque book smile

I USE THE CAR FOR FUN, I WANT TO MAKE IT A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF ONE.

REASON WHY I WANT OR WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THE GEAR BOX AND IM VERY NEW TO THIS SO FORGIVE ME BUT IT IS CURRENTLY A HUGE PAIN TO GET IT IN TO REVERSE, CONSTANTLY SLIPPING, IT ALSO MAKES A VERY ODD NOISE SOMETIMES WHEN PULLING AWAY IN SECOND AT 15000RPM, IVE BEEN TOLD ITS THE GEAR BOX!

AM I WRONG?

Caps city centre smile

No need to find a different box just get another of the same model. Difficulty engaging gears could be binding of the inner and outer gaiters so check these too.

Do you know the last time the gearbox oil was changed or checked?

That said, the boxes are pretty common so sourcing a spare. Getting it refurbished. Modding the linkage so it is further forward. Then fitting would be easy.

The most common causes of poor gear selection on these cars are down to clutch hydraulics.
Make sure it's not a worn out cylinder or clutch before you fork out for a rebuilt gearbox.

Wow 15k, do you mean 1500?, if you want to replace it look for a direct swap type. Quaife do some motorsport ones that are a direct fit to the 2.8 and 2.9 engines, big bank ballance required.

Good plan, but I'd get a second opinion on that noise when pulling away in second before taking it out scratchchin
