964 C2 - Do I just generate a random number ?!

Hello all,

Well, I think the time has come to sell my beloved 964 C2 (Manual). I just don't seem to get much chance to use her anymore so I think I'd rather see someone else enjoy her.

Problem is, I have no idea how to value her! Looking at the classifieds the asking prices are all over the place and I can't tell what, if anything, is actually selling. For a 'normal' car I'd turn to glass' guide but not sure that really helps much in this instance so I'm just after a little advice on how other people approached it ?

I guess the answer is base my asking price against the ads up now but I'm just wondering if there is a more recognised 'guide' approach out there ?

My normal and rather anally retentive method is to produce a spreadsheet of all the ads I can find with different ages, miles, specs, private/trade. If you can get 8 or so similar cars, a pattern often emerges.

The impression seems to be that late aircooled 3.2s/964s/993s are in big demand.

However, I would suspect that, although there may be a lot of potential buyers, they are very selective. It would need to tick all the right boxes and be correctly priced, i.e:

- Coupe
- Manual
- In the case of the 964 - rwd
- Newer the better ('92/93 cars bit more desirable)
- Originality (very important)
- Condition - inside, outside, underneath, no rust.....
- Fully detailed history
- Nice colour combo and spec
- Most of all, the lower the mileage, the better

The higher your car scores in each of these areas the more it's worth - IMO

Regarding the 'value adds' that were mentioned, my car is pretty reasonable.

It's a 1991 C2 Coupe manual in Turquoise with a cream interior (Rare / special colour ?)
122,000 miles (So not super low but not unreasonable)
RWD as C2 but no air-con if that makes much difference (Does have a sun roof)
Minor mods but nothing major i.e. 17" cup alloys, strut brace, braided brake lines and lowered slightly from stock.
Full stamped up history (Mix of Porsche and recognised specialists - Project nine being used for last three years by myself)
Lots of reciepts etc. too
Condition is very good with anything that the garage said needed doing done. Therefore it's had poly bushes, recent tyres and new starter motor etc. in the last three years to make sure the car was running/driving well.

They're also difficult to price because some are changing hands without being advertised. I suspect that as a result of this thread yours will go that way too!

Beautiful car, love the color, I'm sure it will sell quickly. I'm very interested to see what kind of price you come up with as I'm in a similar position with my '93 C2. Battery was flat today when I went to start it for the first time in 6 weeks or so. I hate to see her just sit.

nice car should sell well just had a valuation on mine of Porsche club of 35k and mine has full history and 160k miles if that helps

if you want to sell in a few days - £40k..........if you want to wait a bit £50k.........£45k probably the sweet spot.

Thanks, that's interesting and seems to line up with my initial pricing spreadsheet so I think I am on the right track.

Having had a look at a dozen examples or so Bigunit's input doesn't seem so far removed from reality. Certainly 50k does seem high end but the cars at this end are still similar mileage/usage. I would agree my car is a clean and tidy usable car, not a display piece as such but still in very good condition. I am leaning towards the 45k bracket but will keep doing some research to be sure before I put an advert up on Pistonheads.

Your car is in a very desirable colour, it is very rare. How much that adds to the sell price I have no idea. I know of a 130k mile C2 that recently sold quickly at mid 40's. It was a lovely car to be fair.

The colour is ultra rare I think. I've never seen another one. It is listed simply as 'Turquoise' according to the build sticker so not sure if it is a one-off or anything.

It's one of the things that makes me question selling, I know I'll never find another one!

Think this is pretty much spot on having watched 964 prices closely this year, although maybe a touch high given that its now the end of summer. Watch the red c2 at SVP and see how quick that moves - they normally price things pretty spot on to sell in a reasonable timeframe and generally don't move on the offer price. Your location will probably have an impact too, london postcode will make it move much quicker..

If you don't need the cash I would seriously consider hanging into it. Sounds like you are probably well in the money given recent prices increases. You probably will find another one just hard to say what kind of mula you will need to purchase. I was in same situation recently and sold mine but a few months later bought another one

Haha - mainly update on Facebook these days Boxsey. Yes needed the dosh mate and sold it to someone we both know so is being well looked after. I ended up finding a pearl white c2 manual coupe in Ireland (c16 car originally) of all places circa February. Pic below

Well, it's official, mine is now advertised. I updated my excel sheet and priced mine a little below the competition. Will see if I get any interest. If not, I will enjoy her for another year !
