I have received my engine from AS in a crate. It is fixed on a stand, that is bolted to the crate.
My plan is to fix the flywheel and clutch to the engine (and maybe headers if recommended), and then lift and install engine in car.

My question is - how do I install the flywheel/clutch/headers when the engine is on the stand. My understanding is that the stand is bolted to the engine where the flywheel will attach - so if I remove that, how will the engine 'stand' while I work on it?

Thanks

My engine sat on a wheeled table I have. It looks unstable but was fine. I lifted it on and off with my engine crane.

Carefully balanced on blocks of wood.
Think the adaptor plate needs to go on before the flywheel.

That's the best photo I've seen yet showing exactly how the engine mount components are assembled and located. I've been wondering about this, but figured I'd wait until I was ready (hopefully next month!) before pursuing the answer. Thanks!

The block of wood supporting the front of the engine is pretty much what I surmised.

A block of wood on the front side is enough to support the engine?? Wow! Didn't know that! I thought the sump (since I have an LS3 without dry sump) on the bottom would not let the engine sit on the ground/table, but had to be 'hoisted' at all times... excellent pictures, thanks!!

I still have quite a while before the engine goes in, but I have been thinking about this during my break from the build - rather than enjoy a holiday, my brain keeps going back to questions on the build! Weird huh??? My wife thinks I'm crazy...

I didn't sleep well for much of my 2.5 year airplane project and haven't been sleeping very well these last eleven months. I toss and turn and churn over questions and possible solutions to all sorts of Ultima issues.

I really can't wait to get the project done, start driving the car, and begin sleeping properly again.

The engine in the pictures is an LS7 with dry sump so may not be the same as the LS3 sump.
The adaptor plate stabilises the engine very well.

Chaps

Your problem is a lack of alcohol prior to going to bed. I find it invaluable for a very good night's sleep!

Sounds good to me! Is it too early for a nice glass of bourbon?

Probably never too early, but personally I stick to 6.00pm before I start and I like to include a meal.

A nice bottle of red wine seems about right to me.....

Had mine for tonight so off to bed! biggrin

I would very seriously consider dry sump before you install your motor. Go back 6 or 7 years on this forum and look at all the issues that came up about rod and main bearing failures on SBCs. Everyone was trying to use accusump systems as a crutch and the guys that where running the cars hard on the street or track where having bearing failures. Chevy didn't put dry sump on the LS7 because its cheap they put it on because the Z06 corvette can generate some good numbers, stop, cornering ect but not Ultima number's by a long shot Add to that the heat that you see in your part of the world and the extra volume of a dry sump and a very good oil cooler should be on top of your list. Just tryin to help, Lee

Lee, I can't agree more. Dry sump, oil cooler with thermostat is the way to go for all weather conditions, spirited or track driving.

If you look just forward of the oil filter on my engine you will see a standard GM oil-over-water oil cooler.
Seems to work well and no need for a separate radiator.
