It's been several years since I bought an SLR. So much has changed, and whilst in bringing myself up to speed as much as I'm able to time wise, I've completely failed to even short list some probable purchases. I'll explain why.

Canon doesn't seem to dominate the market any longer. And Without going through the entire range of brands, I'm not sure what's hot - in my price range.

A natural progression would be a canon 70d. Looks good to me. My question is, what would you be considering if film was far more important than stills, in the same price bracket (ish) with a bias towards cinema look and feel video, without going quite as far as the black magic or black magic pocket camera which looks interesting but is too far from an slr to be of great interest to me.

What would a self taught film student of sorts want to invest in, if looking at an slr... Or possibly not even an slr.

I quite like the look of the 70D, but it's not on my list as its already 2 years old, I'm not ready to buy, and I haven't looked into its rivals yet although I'm hearing good things about Panasonic.

Being able to use canon lenses, h264 and a decent slo mo would each be a plus, as well a diversity of frame rates.

What current and popular makes and models spring to mind?
And to confuse matters hehe what models might I look at it I was to eliminate the need for still photography entirely?
Thanks in advance with apologies for being so vague.

Two questions to help focus your decision

1) whats your budget?

2) what do you want to use it for?

Expat, the Sony AR7II looks very interesting! More than I had hoped to spend, but I must admit I'm not sure how much or quite when I'll be ready to buy. Definitely going to be watching this space, so thanks for that superb suggestion(!)

It's difficult as I genuinely have no clear subject or focus (see what I did there) - just enthusiasm and ideas at this stage.

Good to see you too Pixel Pusher. I hope the greater scheme of things is treating you well wavey

Many swear by the Sony A7s for video - lower resolution at 12 megapixels for stills but supposedly has light gathering powers that exceed Michael Jackson's.

But requires external recorder for 4k...

Good video with any kind of slr/mirrorless needs proper focus and steady cam etc. I you just want to record snips and holiday videos just use your phone (or any slr).

At the risk of breaking PH protocol - having seen others note that they have things for sale - I've decided that, with ongoing car maladies, one or the roof the A7Rii or Monochrome has to go so if you are interested I've a mint less than month old Sony A7R mark 2, a 70-200mm Sony OSS G series (their 'pro spec') zoom - less than a month old and mint and a (spot the pattern!) mint two week old Sony-Zeiss 16mm to 35mm zoom.

If that sounds of interest you could PM me?
