a good local plumber is all you need. I have always felt British Gas was a rip off.

We have had ours with Corgi for the last 8 years and wouldnt be without it. Of course thats easy to say in hindsight after we've had about £1700 of work/call outs over that time we are about break even on our subscription costs I guess wink

We have had a few plumbing leaks and a couple of boiler part failures. Most recently we needed a complete heat exchanger and rebuild, about £800 of parts plus a day labour. Each year they come and service the boiler, included in the price. We pay £16 a month, so its basically £200 a year ish.

When ive been away at the weekend and the missus has called me concerned about a leak etc. They always get someone there in a couple of hours

As always with these insurances, the majority of people pay their subs and might not benefit, its there for piece of mind.....

Set aside some money each month and 'self insure' instead.

You might as well just buy a new Worcester Bosch boiler with 8yr guarantee every 8 years! At least you'd get the benefit of always having a fairly new boiler and WB have a good reputation for after-sales service.

I saw a Baxi (I think) with 10year guarantee the other day.

Yeah but we didnt install it, it was in the house already with a long expired warranty

its not just the boiler that's covered, its all your in home stuff, and the yearly service is included, which saves you some of the cost

the boiler manufacturers cover their boiler. So far Ive had 2 zone valve failures, and inline softener leak. Some hidden fittings fail in bathrooms. No really big jobs, but each time you need a plumber out at the weekend and new parts

The biggest hassle we had when moving here was actually getting hold of a plumber in the first place.....

Like any of these things, whether its car warranties or boilers, its just a gamble and you pay for piece of mind/less hassle

Yeah I tend to agree, trouble is in London who will come out at short notice without taking you to the cleaners? Had no boiler over Xmas a few years ago and was miserable.

Fair points, and depends on what your set up. With today's typical combi setup everything is in the boiler - the only outside items and pipes and rads which you don't normally expect to go wrong.

Yes - I love it when people say "call a local plumber." I'm sure there must be one somewhere who actually turns up!

In some ways having a service contract is arse-covering. Once you've called BG or whoever, you've done your bit.

I've got 25 rads/towel rails and a 36kw system boiler, multiple zones, unvented storage cylinder, 2 baths, 4 toilets, 3 showers etc...and it would appear, that it was installed down to a price by cowboy plumbers, so its gradually being replaced as bits fail...

...so I might get my premiums back wink

Im not sure I would pay £20 a month to insure a £700 combi system, serving a couple in a 2 bed home.....but thats the game for the insurers. Thousands of people signed up for piece of mind, could actually pay enough premiums to buy a new boiler, long before theirs really needs replacing.....

When your missus is on her own for a few days mid winter and the boiler stops working, its easy for her to ring and have an approved guy turn up two hours later, fix it with no bill to worry about

On the other hand if you have a local mate who is a heating engineer, you're sorted already.....put the money in the bank
