Not only that but moving out of a London postcode to a hamlet in Surrey has upped the cost too.

I have a new UK Mustang on order and finally the car can be found on the insurers databases.

GoCompare came up with eSure who had a really reasonable quote of £380 FC. London, parked outside, Business Use, 50 odd years old, full NCB and no claims/convictions.

Today I may well say yes to a little detached house with an integral garage, 30 miles south of London, not far from Guildford.

GoCompare's cheapest quote was again eSure but now £100 more at £480 ????

Do the same again but have the car on drive and it drops to £420 ????? so still more than staying in London where I know for sure it will be damaged, as have all my other vehicles.

My current car, an old e36 is costing me £160 but to move out, it goes up £100 as well.

Can any of you insurance experts explain, especially as I would be sleeping over the garage, being that it was the utility room/workshop.

the computer says...

it may just be that there is a pattern of cars in that area which are garaged where the owner has had accidents / there have been thefts etc...
perhaps people leave cars unlocked in the garage and they are easier to steal...

there will be some pattern behind it...

insurance computers are always logical, and rarely show common sense

Has it not got something to do with the increased risk of the car being pranged being driven in and out of a garage?

Garages burn down.

People bump into them when parking.

And, if a car's in the garage, the keys are in that house, rather than car on the street and keys in one of many houses.

Makes sense, I suppose, just seems weird that overall it's more expensive than being in a dodgy London postcode where cars and bikes are trashed and get stolen all the time.

My motorbike was vandalised 3 times in a year in theft attempts but I never claimed. Maybe people in war torn areas don't claim as much as the folks in the Shires biggrin

New Mustang will be a target for theft. Easiest way to steal it is to break into the house and get the keys. Car parked on the road, who knows what house the keys are in. Car kept on property, now the thief knows.

But hidden down a dirt track off a barely used road and then parked away from sight biggrin

There was me trying to protect my new baby whilst increasing my commuting time/costs/fuel when it seems I might as well stay in London and just accept all the dents/dings/and scrapes before it's gone forever, but I'll be saving money biggrin

It's only a couple of quid extra a week - seems like good value to me.

That website is useful.

My current area is F* so pretty bad and motorcycles must be in a locked garage. The area I want to move to, in the middle of nowhere compared to where I am now is only one better, E*.

Anyhow surely my premium should be a little bit less.

£480 to insure your new Mustang. Sucks to be you mate rolleyeswink

I used to insure my cars in the garage and on the driveway. However found it cheaper to keep them on the street. I guess for the reasons people have mentioned. It's strange, as you'd think the opposite.

That's what my insurance company told me when I enquired about this very subject.

Change your quote to "Parked in the street" It might bring the price down.

As long as that's what you do. If you claim your only car is street parked but then it catches on fire in or is stolen from a car shaped space in your garage, it's going to be hard to argue that you didn't habitually keep it there. Whether you'd then be liable for the premium difference or something significantly more, I don't know, but it wouldn't be a good starting position.

It all comes down to claims history: if one area has more claims involving garaged cars, street-parked motors will be cheaper.

Oh well, the size has nixed the idea of putting the Mustang in there anyway. It's a good size, length 5.1m by width 2.8m but there are units at the end with a sink and washing machine etc so that's 0.7m taken up leaving only 4.4m.

Big enough for my Beemer but the Mustang is over 4.7m long.

What that doesn't account for is the value of the vehicles in the area, such an area can cost more than an area with a higher crime / theft rate in comparison.

So you need an area with a low crime rate with few expensive motors.

Thanks for the link. Both home & my work post codes are 'A' so that is good.
