My brother works in M&A (business sales) and he's had enough, despite being pretty successful. However, this sector is quite niche and he doesn’t know how to, or more precisely where to, look for a new job outside M&A. I guess he has transferrable skills but I have no idea either. He’s probably on £80k-ish. He worked in a niche financial area in the past but its 10 years since he was there and he wonders if he could go or would even want to go back to that.

Just putting his CV on a generic website seems a bit non-specific. Are there ones that he may be better using (higher paid jobs?) or does he find an actual recruiter, i.e. a person more than a faceless company.

Any help much appreciated (by him).

Which recruiter is he going to speak to?

Most recruiters won't be able to assist in the way he may need in his position. Sure, he can put a CV together and speak to some but unless he knows what he wants to do and can update his CV accordingly then he will be 'matched' to jobs the recruiter sees fit and has available.

He needs to prepare himself better first. List all his skills. List the activities/job tasks he enjoys and wants to do. Spend some time identifying a range of jobs that fit his goal and newly created 'list'. Slim that list down and/or update CV again to target those specific job types. He could also consider networking with others in the same industry/job type to see where they came from or where they know others have gone to.

Not much to add to that great advice; he needs to know what he would enjoy doing and then do the matching exercise to see if he's experienced/qualified. If not, can he close the gap in any way. If not, choose next option. If he can, then work on closing that skills or qualification gap and then apply.

Easier said than done of course, so some external, focussed and unbiased support may assist...smile

Good luck to him!
