Enjoying an evening out so drop into a local pub for a few drinks, we grab a table and try a pint or two. Then the inevitable, just pop out to the toilet for a pee. Barman had the same idea, now its normal practice to use soap and water following the relief process, but this did not apply to the barman who simply finished up and walked out back to behind the bar vomit

Would you have taken issue or walked away never to return?

Walked out never to return — just like I did when I saw a butcher going from cooked to raw meat & back again without any hygiene considerations…. vomit

My old local the landlord made barstaff wash their hands in the sink by the bar to avoid getting germs from the dryer and door in public toilets.
Probably not the case most places.

I was in a sandwich shop many years ago and the person in front was served, sandwich made for him, money taken, change given back etc.

However the man serving had the same latex gloves on throughout.

I was next and when asked what would I like I suggested a new pair of gloves and money to be handled separately etc. He looked shocked and a little pissed off and told me he was being hygienic by wearing gloves etc., not touching the food with his bear hands.

I walked out and never went back.

Doesn't that mean the tap of the sink by the bar is dirty? nuts

Don’t you think that over the past couple of decades we have become too hygienic, and this has a determent to our children’s health, as kids we were always getting cuts, bruises, didn’t wash hands, only had a hands and face wash at night, one bath a week, but generally didn’t live in a clean sterile environment, didn’t seem to be ill then

But now kids don’t build up an immune system because they are always so clean, told to wash their hands all the time, etc. etc.

Anyhow back to the OP, don’t think it would have bothered me

If it was in my local, ie. somewhere I go regularly and enjoy being I would probably have a word with the owner. Let them make the point with staff that they would lose business because of their inaction.

If it was somewhere I didn't really care about going back to I just wouldn't go back.

Agree about things being too clinical in a modern world but washing hands before serving food or drink is not a bad idea. In a public setting you don't know who is on the receiving end and what I (or you) may not be affected by may make someone else quite ill.

Same with ice cream cones. Wear a glive and don't handle money. The last one I saw had this hideous woolen mitten on all covered in ancient stains.

Considering the amount of people who leave pub/club/restaurant/office toilets without washing their hands, the amount of pissy/stty germs on the doorhandle must be huge and therefore even if you wash your hands you will get horrible germs straight back onto them when you leave. No?

Yep you do and it's also the reason the barman should wash his hands in the handwash behind the bar as well.

One of the pubs I did emergency cover at was an eye opener.

Head chef (graduate of the local food college) was using the same knife for raw and cooked meats, not cleaning her hands after handling raw chicken breasts eek Apparently I should have kept my opinions to myself unless I had a diploma in food prep irked

Staff toilet was a shocker. I queried why there were footprints on the seat and poop smears down the outside of the bowl. Turns out one of the staff was from the Middle East and used to stand rather than sit on the toilet rofl

The report to head office was an interesting one hehe

Hygiene is a very strange, contradictive and personal thing, I wonder how those claiming to be so fastidious manage when kissing, shaking hands or even having sex. Do you put the willing partner through a high temp antibacterial wash before touching them?
I bet that goes down well.
