He also - outwardly at least - bore no ill-will towards the more prudish elements of post war society that treated him so shabbily
Care to expand on that? Genuinely intrigued.Fantic SuperT said:

Care to expand on that? Genuinely intrigued. The outcome was that there was a significant public backlash at what was perceived as an exemplar of harsh application of outdated legislation and, within a couple of years, the MacMillan Govt commissioned the Wolfenden Report which paved the way for de-criminalising homosexuality

Edward was prosecuted in the early fifties for homosexuality and imprisoned for, if I recall, two years. There was a strong body of evidence that the 'establishment' wanted a high profile conviction for a homosexuality offence as they were worried about falling standards in morality (as they perceived it) post-war. He made himself an easy target by always being quite open about his bisexuality.

"On two occasions (Edward) Montagu was charged and committed for trial at Winchester Assizes, firstly in 1953 for having underage sex with a 14-year-old Boy Scout at his beach hut on the Solent,[3] a charge he has always denied."The outcome was that there was a significant public backlash at what was perceived as an exemplar of harsh application of outdated legislation and, within a couple of years, the MacMillan Govt commissioned the Wolfenden Report which paved the way for de-criminalising homosexuality

What you rather churlishly omit to mention is that he was acquitted on that charge. I dare say you feel emboldened knowing that you can't libel the dead but you might have the decency to wait until his corpse is cold - never has a forum name been more apposite.......
Yes let's not unnecessarily confuse his homosexuality with paedophilia. Unless of course his acquittal turns out to be another Jeremy Thorpe MP / Cyril Smith MP / Victor Montagu MP / Sir Jimmy Savile / Lord Leon Brittan etc. sort of justice. In which case the 'fetch me another scout, this one's split' stories are appropriate.Edited by Fantic SuperT on Monday 31st August 17:46
It's obvious to me that there is a set of posters on PH who can't wait to jump in with their odious comments as soon as someone has passed away.
Even if they are right - there eagerness to start firing on all barrels is to me almost as revealing about their nasty little personalities as the things they accuse the deceased of.
