I though I'd post here rather than the car forums as I think it's more of a computer type problem, even though it's in the car!

I fitted the Eonon D5124FE head unit to our E39 530i a couple of years ago, it's one of those Chinese copies of the BM unit full screen double din type but with a single din rear to fit properly in the dash.

It was a right pain when I first got it & I had a lot of emails exchanged with the suppliers in China with new firmware upgrades being emailed etc.

In the end I found if we forgot about trying to make the FM radio or any of the bluetooth or iPhone functions work it was ok. Leaving it being an MP3 player, with DVDs for the kids, sat Nav & screen for the reversing camera. Hardly ideal but ok for our needs when my better half got a new iPhone that didn't have enough room for music anyway.

We were half way down the UK on the way to France for a holiday & I had my old iPhone that did have music on it, so though I'd play that it started going very slow again (buttons taking an age to react) just as it had before so tried to switch it off & on as used to work, but I think I was a bit to quick trying to switch it back on & it just came up with a white screen. So we had lots of fun trying to find our way though france with no sat nav or any kind of anything player. Those old paper map things are ok, but when you drive off them they aren't much use...

Anyhow just about got there & back so now need to address the lack of anything player in the car.

I contacted the people who had been helpful when it was under a year old, this was there helpful reply:

Dear customer,

Thanks for your email.

Please don’t worry, we will help you to resolve your problem.

According to your questions, our technician gave advice that the unit is hardware fault, maybe you can consider to buy a new unit.

Sorry for inconvenience caused.

Hope this will make sense for you.

Have a nice day.

Sincerely,

Alchemy

I tried a few other tacks with them but they have no interest in helping any more.

It says it runs windows CE 6.0, but from doing some searching it seems maybe that is only for the satnav part of it. I was hoping there would be a reboot for the windows in it but, if it's not all windows it may not be that simple?

I've tried disconnecting the car battery for 30 mins but that had no effect, nor did the little reset pin activated button. When turning it on it just has a white screen, the buttons beep but have no effect. With the unit off, engaging reverse in the car switches it on but it's still just the white screen.

When they sent me the firmware update it went in on one of the miro SD card slots in the front. So I'm wandering if there could be some kind of boot up memory card I could get somewhere?

White screen tends to suggest that the internal EEPROM has become corrupted and there's no boot code/firmware available - or some other fairly catastrophic failure of an internal component.

If that is the case, replacement of the whole unit is the easier option as a repair would involve finding a correctly configured/programmed component to use as a replacement.

Of course, if you bought it from a reputable retailer, there's the whole SOGA and "durability" discussion to be had.

Ah, just what I didn't want to hear! Thanks for the explanation though, sounds very likely, at least that tells me why I need to buy a new one.

I'd just put the original radio that actually worked back in if I hadn't recently spent ages ripping the boot to bits getting the camera installed.

Your right getting one from someone good to start with is much better, no one in this country sells that unit though & anything else custom made costs more than the car is worth. So I'll have to look at normal double din units for it I think.
