I'm sitting here in a hotel in San Mateo, and have to check out soon. I don't need to get to the airport until 5pm, my mate is out of town and I'm (mostly) done with work.

So what to do? All I can think of so far is:

Eat - I'll have a late lunch somewhere
Shop - electronics? Done that, but browsing Fry's is fun, maybe go to an auto parts store and see if there are any good tools on special

Which won't fill an afternoon. I could work some more but I'm losing the Bank Holiday anyway, and will end up working on the flight, so bugger that!

Ideas please!

Ever been to the Coit Tower? It's superbly odd, even by SF standards. Great views, but especially noticeable for the Soviet-style murals which seem very out of place!

No, never been! Just realised I've never been to the Winchester Mystery House either.

Is there a race school on at Laguna Seca? You could get a half day.

Or you could stand outside M5 Industries and shout "Mythbusters is st without Kari" through the steel shutter.

Tool shopping done. They're SO cheap! Time for Fry's. This could get expensive. Less than $40 so far though.

Abalone sandwich at Duarte's tavern in Pescadero (Half Moon Bay then hang left)
Brunch at Moss Beach Distillery (Half Moon Bay then hang right)
Shopping at Gilroy Outlets (south on 101)
Over to Santa Cruz then north on Highway 1 back to Montero Beach then back over to San Bruno and SFO
Or Fisherman's Wharf in San Fran if you didn't already do the tourist stuff

Coit tower is a good call, get down the piers, the sea lions are crazy, you'll smell em before you see em.

Hiring a bike and heading up to the bridge is a good shout.

I had some time to kill there and got on one of thos e hop on hop off tour bus things, had a running commentary on the ear phones that was interesting, but I ended up chatting to the driver callend ulirch (German guy), probably in my top 5 conversations of all time.

Make sure you go to Lombard street if you've not been

Also check out a vlogger on YouTube called fun for Louis

He usually knows what's good to see

If it's dry you should love it

Stake out properly and make sure you have an escape route, and get rid of the gun somewhere safe. No witnesses.

Trip to Alcatraz island.
Trip to the Muir Woods.

I did both, loved them both. Alcatraz was a real eye opener, loved the history of the place. I took one of those personal headset voice tours where you wear an individual headset and player, and wander around as directed by the voice in your head smile

Simply Epic.

Helped in that "The Rock" is one of my favourite films biggrin

We miss our hot geeky red head frown

besides it was the peeps at discovery that slashed the star/staff budget, not Adam or Jamie.

yes Also, do it in Oakland. Murders are much less conspicuous there.

I only had a couple of hours, so I drove down to Stevens Creek and browsed in a music shop, then took a leisurely drive up 280, through Redwood City, lunch at Five Guys then to the airport. I've done the tourist stuff in the past, but live just driving round the various communities just looking at houses, cars, shops etc. if I'd had more time I'd have gone over to Half Moon Bay I think.

I did this back in the early 90's. En route to the Hawaiian Tropic girls wet tee shirt party in a Fresno bar, boy what a party/night, I got stopped by a pair of CHiP's rozzers whilst doing a steady 95mph on the I99. A real life experience!
