Early in October my wife and I will be staying overnight for one night in Naples, Italy, prior to flying back to the UK the next day. We will have about 6-8 hours of free time so we would like to do some sightseeing. We like culture, art, buildings, gardens, street life etc. Our hotel is close to Naples Central Station.

Do any PHers have any recommendations for what we could do that day? We went to Pompeii and Herculaneum several years ago, so they can be ignored.

We could take one or more of the sightseeing open topped bus routes to get an initial feel for Naples, but I think we'd prefer either to have a short guided tour of part of the city or just have a small list of recommended places to walk to see etc.

Note that we have travelled through Naples Airport many times before on our way to other parts of Italy but never stayed in or visited Naples at all.

Then you know Naples is a sthole on a par with Grimsby. There is fk all reason to spend a day there if you can avoid it!

Although we've used the airport maybe 6-8 times we've always travelled on elsewhere the same day. On this upcoming trip the timings are such that we get back to Naples from Sicily mid evening and our flight is also mid evening the next day, so a day in Naples is unavoidable. We don't want to spend all day in the hotel or at the airport!

Ignore the naysayers.
Naples is a fascinating place. You've not much time, but for a bite to eat and a mooch around, Galeria Uberto and surrounds is worth a gander. It's less than half hour cab ride to the airport.

Naples is a total dump run by organised crime syndicates. A really filthy hole full of litter, taxi touts, pickpockets and other scumbags. Don't wear any nice watches or have designer luggage. Don't get a taxi from the airport; it's a really short bus ride away.

It's a shame you only have 6 hours, because some of the surrounding area on the Amalfi coast is stunning but you need all day. You can probably get into Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana and spend the day there instead, exploring nice lanes, markets, great restaurants and a lovely lemon grove where you can buy Limoncello made from the lemons.

However, if you must stay in Naples, often the left luggage at the station is closed so you'll be taking your bags with you. The museum is OK, but the very best thing there is a stunning reclining statue of the veiled Christ http://www.museosansevero.it/en/the-veiled-christ/... in the Sansevero chapel. That's worth a visit.
Naples is also famous for its pizza, which is very nice, but so is pizza everywhere else in Italy.

Thanks for the advice etc so far.

We do realise that Naples is not the most spectacular place in Italy. It's also something of a place for the criminal element. As regards suitcases, we will be able to leave these at the hotel while we spend a few hours in the town, then go back and head for the airport. Maybe we'll just go to the best shopping area and cruise around there and have lunch etc. although this sounds a wasted opportunity.

We have been to Sorrento for a week, and also Ravello for a week on three occasions, so we know and love the Amalfi Coast area well.. we've done all the local historical sites etc.

I lived there when I was a kid, if you could find my CHIPS motorcycle (electric) I'd really appreciate it, thieving bds. We were there for four years and I have so many stories my Dad told me about how corrupt it was ranging from houses being fire bombed for not paying protection money, people being knocked off when the local Mafia took a shine to their wives and being babysat by the FBI as we had the only house phone in the area, bonkers place back then and this was when he was in the RAF.

Here's an update as we're back from our trip to Italy/Sicily.

Once again, our time in Naples confirmed it is a dump. Worse still, before we left home on the morning of the day we flew to Naples our hotel called to say they did not have a room for us, even though we booked it 6 months beforehand. They put us in a what was not much better than a doss house a km away. Not happy..but what could we do? We had also booked the same hotel on our way home and this time we got a junior suite which was pretty crap really. We will not be staying in Naples again.

On the day of our flight home we opted to be at the airport hours ahead of flight time rather than be wandering around Naples.

As for the rest of the holiday, it was excellent as expected.

Horses for courses....I've been to Naples with my wife a few times and always enjoy it.
If you like a gritty Italian city, lots of hustle and bustle.
We just wander around and soak up the atmosphere which is challenging but rewarding.
