Checking in to Volume 9.

It seems appropriate to mention that this week I find myself working at the Nardo test track. As you come in the main gate there is a big display of various records that have been set at the facility.......

Of relevance to this thread quickest 10,000km, Quickest 25,000km and Quickest 50,000km all set in 1983 by a Mercedes 190E 2.3. I am not able to get a pic of the display as cameras are all covered up with stickers on entry to the site.
Nice bit of story here: https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/mercedes-benz/cla...

It was quite a feat: run flat out for 50,000km without breaking.

But those tight shorts: what were they thinking? It's like Freddie Mercury's racing team.

And I noticed a negative split in the times, e.g. the second 25,000 was at a higher average speed.

As for the shorts that is just the local style, they are issued at the gate.

That is quite an image. You had me at "negative split".

It's a while since I've seen one of these. Very typically uninspiring period Jap interior, but you can be sure it's durable and functional.

I like it. A lot.
Saw a coupe version many a years ago. Nobody wants these, I reckon. Too thirsty?
Not seen any Toyota Camry's lately either.

V12 AMG, can I ask what you think of this, including the asking price?

http://www.southbournegarage.co.uk/used-cars/merce...

It's local to me and I am tempted to go and have a look.
Local to you? The pictures are taken a few doors down from my sister in law!! She lives just down the hill a little on that road.

Looks like a straight car with no immediate alarm bells. V12 badge on boot has to go.

Shame it is just a few months too old to have the MOST DVD based Comand and still has the old CD D2B Comand.

As usual, dealer lists "Total specification", pet hate of mine.
The following could be a few bargaining chips for you.
No Keyless go, no distronic, no rear fridge, no rear door blinds, TV tuner on the late cars has a different boot carpet on the passenger side, so not sure whether this actually has it or not, can't see the linguatronic stalk. Probably no heated steering wheel (extremely rare).

If you go and look at it :
-Cycle the ride height up and down over and over to try and expose any weakness on the ABC system.
-Take your time to wade through the service history. Check if ABC work or Coil packs have been done.
-Make sure you drive it from cold and dealer hasn't warmed it up to give the gearbox a good check. It is normal for the shifts to be quite slow and firm when cold but it shouldn't slip or bang at all.
-Take it up the A338 and boot it coming up the slip road. WOT is needed to highlight any coil pack weakness.
-I don't know your car history but these M275 motors are relentless when it comes to the shove in the back feeling. Make sure it doesn't have a turbo overun feeling when you lift off the throttle after hard acceleration.
-As with all these cars, press every button, poke every plastic. Most aren't specific to the bi turbo so not too expensive but the V12 does have the exclusive leather so any trim bits can be hard to get hold of.

In an ideal world you would take it to a MB specialist to have a STAR readout done.

Regarding the price, I think it is expensive. There aren't many good ones out there and the dealer states that in the advert. There are very few buyers though so you both have some bargaining chips. What's it worth? I'm not sure as I haven't been following the market on these. My gut says that's a £7.5k car maybe?
That's really useful, thanks so much. I am not sure I am really interested but I would like to have a poke round one. My feelings similar to yours on price, very small group of buyers. There are 2 x W220 S65 AMGs on AT at £15k a piece, one of which has been for sale for approx 6 months.

I shall print your message to take with me if I decide to test drive it!

That Rover looks absolutely terrific.

The things I'd do for a perfect British Racing Green Rover 800 Vitesse Coupe......

I loved them when they were new. My parents had several 800s (pre update and post update).

The other thing I'd love is a silver pre update (XX) 800 Vitesse. The one with the Honda V6. If I could find one just like my dad's old one, I'd really cherish it. I am very fond of that car. His was G-reg and he sold it in 1992 or 1993 I think.

Sadly I bet that his has long been scrapped. The odds are against it being around.

Oh, the other thing about 800s is that on the rare occasion I see one, I can't believe how small they look now.

I'm in.

Edit. Love the 800. Pretty sure that's "only" a Vitesse, which had 180bhp, rather than the full fat Vitesse Sport which had 200bhp. Still a great way to spend £695 though. Some alright sheds in the background of the pictures, too...

By 1996 all Vitesses were Vit Sport spec but they dropped 'Sport' from the name wink

I'd like to think they drive like a bigger 620Ti. They were really sharp and quick from my perspective at the time.

No real idea though, but the 2ltr Rover Turbo was a bloody good engine at the time.

Can't believe the V10 Toureg is now in budget. Bork fund the same again I reckon.

The E65 will be being sold by someone who realises that they need to do A, B, C... in the same way you are thinking about the E38.

I'd love an E38 740 to drive my regular 800 mile return trip!
I spent quite some time thinking about it, looking at 'shiny' pictures of my car has encouraged me to hang on to it. Besides, it'll be rife for increasing in value just like the other BMWs of that era, right?! Well maybe not but at least it won't depreciate further like the newer car.

The standard models are pretty poor, and the Honda steering system in the 827 is particularly nasty. The Vitesse Sport is like a totally different proposition though, it feels like a big hot hatch and the torsen diff helps it find grip where the old 180bhp Vitesse would just wash out.

Autocar thought very highly of it indeed at the time.

Those old 827 Vitesse models are indeed lovely, but it's the SD1 Vitesse which I've always had a hankering for. Absolutely nowhere to keep it and the constant fettling I know it would need would be an issue, but even so, that interior and that noise smile

Slightly over thread budget and lacking history.
I think I've seen this advertised before. It's overpriced for a high mileage car in an undesirable colour.
I hate white cars, but I'm not so sure he's that far off with pricing. Looks like a decent car, and if everything works (as he states), it could be a reasonable buy.

Working aircon, good tyres with lots of tread, no interior trim needing work, no body blemishes etc all offset the post-sale investment which you could otherwise easily reach on a cheaper but tattier car.

The lack of SH and the colour will put many off, and he's competing with cheaper cars, but on the face of it I reckon that would be worth a viewing.

God help me I have just bought a new drivers wing for my W124 on Saturday at a cost of £180 plus VAT from the dealer!!

I note this doesn't have a hole for a side repeater but I am sure that's easily sorted!
Probably one for r129sl, but is the lack of an indicator hole an issue? Seems odd that it doesn't have one if it's original.

It's located within 5 miles of me, so I could be tempted.

There is this as a cheaper after-market alternative, but I'd prefer original.
