An appealing old thing. Something tells me it would be worse in fuel than my V8 though...
Diesel though, I think you can easily get 30mpg from one, sometimes even 32mpg 'on a run'.
But it'll probably run on straight veggie oil or biodiesel.

Still, 88hp (It's just a standard diesel, not a turbodiesel as stated in the ad - TD is just Merc speak for diesel estate), a 4-speed automatic 'box and over 1500kg...

88! And some of them have probably long bolted as well. Ohhhh dear. I'm guessing progress could optimistically described as glacial.

Honestly speaking barchetta boy, they weren't that good in 1994. Let alone now.

Yes, you would.

(If you do end up wanting to sell it, please, please, please can you pop over to Lingfield in it first and if it's nicer than mine I'll buy it and flog mine on!)

We had a great trip out to Tetbury in ours at the weekend to meet up with a load of mates. Bikes go on the back just fine and it cruises really nicely. In all honesty I have a love hate relationship with ours, but the love part means it stays (it's better than meh/hate or even meh/meh). I don't have much emotional pull toward a T4, no real reason... I can see the practical appeal though.

Belated thanks to v12amg and BigBen for your S211 council last week.

Happy Barging everyone.

p.s. Local indy 'Pedro' is working on putting an SLK230k motor into a 124 estate at the moment as a kind of after hours project/experiment. I think the plan is to see if it's viable to offer a range of more modern engines in order to make them an upcycling possibility. I reckon they might try to make an S124 E220CDI at some stage.

Well I never, ever thought I would say this, but I think my S124 has become redundant and will have to be sold.

Tell me if I'm getting fleet strategy wrong please.

Golf Mk4 PD130: wife's daily. Interior like a tramp's pocket (2 small kids), but nice and poky, heated seats and returns 45mpg no matter how you drive it.

Elise S1 sport 160, Porsche 928 manual: weekend fun. "My cars". Live in the garage. The 928 is a keeper, the elise is new to me.

The fly in the ointment: 1992 VW T4 Transporter Camper van with pop roof and 4 berths. 1.9 petrol. Slow, uneconomical but no worse than the Merc for mpg.

My car: 1994 blue-black E280 7 seater with mushroom leather, AC, and £2k worth of stereo (installed by me) including a lovely Becker Traffic Pro head unit with working sat nav and iPhone integration.

Problem is, since buying the VW, we never go in the Merc any more. The only use it gets is me going to the station which is a complete waste. On long journeys, even though the van is a little slower (but will still cruise at 80) and a fair bit noisier, it's actually overall more relaxing because you can get up and walk around, see to the kids, get a can of coke from the fridge (!) etc, plus you can mount the bikes on the back and sleep in it when you get there.

The whole family loves the Merc to bits, but when it comes to driving from Kent to Manchester, if we're all together I would rather be in the van. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it seems my favourite car EVER, the car I grew up in when my dad had one, my late brother's favourite car of all time, and, as I never tire of reminding my wife, a turning circle not beaten by anything this side of a London taxi, the car that has possibly the best interior design of any car ever... has become, well, a bit redundant.

Would I be mad to get rid of it?

Joel
I'm not one for having a car you don't use, but the answer is never get rid of the W124 and keep the mk4 Golf. Never.

Lifted from the Classic thread to solve your problem. Not exactly a saloon, admittedly.

Could make your XJS bills look like pocket change.

I really like the SLC, and went to view one, but why the fk you'd LPG it I really can't imagine.

The problem appears to be the VW. Remove the "problem".
Everyone'll soon get used to squishing in the Merc again

Problem solved.

Hopefully this will illustrate my problem!

N/S temperature wheel not illuminated
Fan speed setting not illuminated
Pointer arrow for air direction not illuminated
O/S temperature wheel dim (normal?)

Dealer tells me there's only two bulbs for all of this? Seems unlikely?

Get rid of the Golf. Maybe the Elise as well.

928 manual and a s124. Quite a combination.

Unless you're short on space or the insurance, road tax and bits and bobs make a big difference to you, why not keep it for the time being?

What a lovely looking old barge!
Old Red. They used to have such nice colours. The 123 was available in six different shades of solid red, mostly at the same time. English, Barolo and Old Red were standard colours; Orient, Middle and Signal were special colours. Special Colours were solid colours that you had to pay extra for: like you have to pay for metallic now (even though you can only get metallic colours now). You could get metallic then, as well, and it cost even more. Blah, blah. They're not that slow. They're not as slow as, say, a bus or a lorry. So they're just fine. We don't need to get to 60 in 7 seconds and 100 in 16.

Sitting in Newcastle Airport departures having dropped my s124 to The Man. I'm quietly optimistic that its not rotten, but we'll see when he takes bits off. Noticed a certain cream 190 in the corner too... Never got a close look but if my car turns out half as good....
I feel a terrible weight of responsibility for promoting the Man so much. What did you think? Anyway, I'll be calling in on Monday so I'll keep an eye on it for you.

And has he finished doing the bits and bobs on my 190?

There are 4 bulbs.

First two are easily accessible just by pulling the plastic knobs off.
To get to the other two you need to undo the nuts under the knobs and the 2 phillips screws above the radio.
Remove the wood panel and you'll find 2 more bulbs housed in a clear plastic.

Replace all 4 whilst you're doing the job. 12v 0.4w with frosted glass are the ones for the job. You'll then get correct brightness and no melting plastic. The clear glass type work ok but the light doesn't diffuse so evenly amongst all the controls.

They are geared well to make the most of the power available. Easily turbocharged as well.
Anyway, a W123 is about graceful wafting really.

Wow, they really packed some serious capacity lpg tanks in that baby! The 450 is horrifically bad on fuel. I ran a 450SL R107 as a daily driver for a bit. Luckily the fuel was free but it drank worse than any other car I've come across.
