Congratulations Ross, that's great news.
Your E65 remains one of my favourite cars on PH.

Went to see this this afternoon.

The vendor sold it just as I was greeting him. Shame as it was a good spec and looked to be in decent nick from what I saw of it.

Looks nice apart from the drug dealer rear windows, a bit cave-like in the back!

Agreed!

Anyone got thoughts on this one? Wheels aren't correct are they?

Another good-looking one to my eye, although the wheels would definitely have to go!

I pick up the V70 this afternoon - really looking forward to it.
Google suggests an easy 300bhp with just a remap... just saying!
Modifying cars isn't really me old chap. I tend to assume that manufacturer motor engineers know more about this sort of stuff than I do, and prefer to leave things as they designed them.

Anyway, just got back in it. First impressions - comically swift in-gear accleration, nice quality and thoughtful details. Really easy to drive, and very smooth. The ergonomics are generally good, but visibility is very much worse than the 124: thick A pillars, low slung roof/low top of windscreen, smaller windows.

22mpg lifetime average according to the OBC! Not sure whether the fun is in the challenge of improving that or in seeing how low I can get it!

Mine is the earlier 2.3 T5 but your impressions fit with my experience. Yours has more torque coming in lower down, which must be nice. 22mpg sounds about right, I've got an OBC 35MPG by doing 60mph with the cruise control on a motorway run...

I think if I was driving it rather than my wife it'd average maybe 26 - 28mpg.

Are those 18" wheels? I've never found the ride quality or NVH on mine to be anything to write home about. The engine sounds like a sewing machine from the inside but mine sounds like a real beast from outside.

They're 17s. I've only driven around 40 miles today, but thought the ride quality was OK over some pretty shabby roads.

I've had a handful of V70s before so knew what to expect, although it is my first T5.

I have to admit, that looks like a very tidy car and if it is the price of domestic peace then I'm sure it will be even better to live with.

Pet hate. Claiming it's fully loaded when in reality it's absolute base spec apart from the ventilated seats.
There's nothing wrong with a base spec car, just state what it is.

This car is a half facelifted car. Has the CD based comand and other older electronics.

Mileage is above average but these wear miles very well. Check history of gearbox fluid changes, any airmatic components and if the injector seals have been changed yet.

The price is good so leaves plenty of room for repair funds.
They are excellent on fuel as well which keeps overall ownership costs low even when some bills come your way.

Congrats Ross on your news (missed it earlier on, too much skimreading)

Congrats CdG, that looks absolutely belting.

V12: I think sellers say "fully loaded" to cars like that because they're used to punting cars where standard spec is 4 wheels and glass, and they've never seen a truly top-spec car from that era.

Thanks for the tips on those points though, S211 diesel is likely to be my next car purchase next year.

For me the two best things are the seats and the hifi.

Also the nice little touches like the parking ticket holder.....

Why don't all cars have this? There should be a law about it!

Thanks for the comments. I expect the vendor is suffering from the same problem as me, what exactly was base spec for this year? Any good resources online so I can read up?

Much to like here if anyone's after a runabout. Very reasonably priced* too, I think, for a 2 owner car in a nice colour.

  • As an owner of one of these wonderful cars I may be bigging-up its' value slightly.

Due to me being a thorn in the side of the DVLA, getting my local MP involved, and being very friendly with my surgeon it looks quite likely that within 1-2 weeks I could well be driving again!

I've just had a mate get some required service bits done on the E65 so it's all ready to go! Just had new engine oil and filter, new spark plugs, air filter and brake fluid. The cause of the minor oil leak has finally been found and is just a weeping rocker cover gasket and that's getting done on Tuesday. It's been advised my rear pads are low at 4mm....any idea how long that should last, based on mostly motorway driving (I know that's how long is a piece of string), but the OBC is saying 19k miles for rear brakes!!

That's the first bit of money spent on the car for a LONG time. Oil and spark plugs weren't due for around 4k miles but wanted to get it done before I can get behind the wheel again so I don't have t worry about it when I can drive....brake fluid was due in 2-3 weeks anyway.

Can't wait biggrin

I'll be back on here soon posting more about how it's costing me loads of money soon enough hehe luckily, the friend doing the work is charging me £25/hour INCLUDING VAT for that work I've just mentioned smile
Excellent news.

Very nice. The poor visibility thing is just a fact of life on modern cars, on the flip side I suspect the old W124 would be pretty poor in an accident in comparison to the Volvo.

Ouch at 22mpg! Out of interest what do you get from the 280? My 300E sees a solid 25-27... the 500SL seems to drink at a comical rate when used fully.

At least you will have prepared Mrs CDG (very nice tea by the way) for V8 fuel consumption!

I don't measure these things particularly accurately, but I reckon it's about where yours is. There isn't much between the S124 and the A124 I don't think, and I assume ~28 overall.

The SL was a different proposition if used properly as you know! I'm seeing the T5 as setting my expectations for the XJS!

One day I'll buy a modern car that does a gazillion miles to the gallon, and turns itself off at traffic light, and has special batteries, and has a little dinky badge on the back. And my head will explode. Until then, I'll enjoy the company of the garage checkout staff.

Very nice - seems a good price for what appears to be a genuine car
