Thinking about buying my kids (& me!) an xbox one for Christmas. We have mobile data (4g) and no fixed-line broadband at home. I've got an xbox one and broadband in my 'office' a few minutes away, so should probably try it on my phone data, but just wondering if anyone has a next-gen console without a fixed-line broadband and how they're finding online gaming?

Ping will be way too high, would be absolutely unplayable. Please do not subject people to the lagfest that would be someone playing with a mobile connection.

Also unless you're on a truly unlimited contract, say goodbye to your allowance.

I used to play GT6 on my PS3 on mobile data HDSPA or whatever it's called. Was fine for 90% of the time but then you'd get the odd evening where it was laggy and unplayable which didn't help when driving in the PH league.

the biggest problem with modern consoles is data allowance modern games on first install can be a few gig.

My last 3 test pings (according to freely available tests) have been 17, 17 & 24. I'm on 50gig of 4g but also could get unlimited 3g as backup if needed. Can always hook up to broadband for an initial install.

Broadband out in the sticks is ok for about 75% of the time, so I'd take 90%!

I used to play COD MW4 on my PS3 over a dongle, back then it was only 3G with 2 bar signal strength and managed a ping of 70 ish. The data it uses playing a game is minimal, I had a £10 PAYG on the dongle and lasted a good couple of weeks, I assume its only sending packets of 1's and 0's.

The problem might (and I say might) not be the data transfer rate, but its the updates to the game. Most online based games will have updates at least every couple of months. So you can expect a several GB update each time. This is going to cost a lot unless you have unlimited data allowance.
