The official winter 2015/2016 snow thread. (Ahem...)
Discussion
It has been a loud night here in Port Solent with some very heavy, constant winds groaning through the masts. The water in my view from the balcony is completely enclosed, so normally calm. The patterns of the wind on the surface shows just how windy it is, and that is when you don't bother looking at the boats getting blown about and masts leaning at drunken angles. There were half a dozen swans asleep on the water last night getting blown all over the place.
Still, at least it isn't raining. It was coming down sideways yesterday cancelling a lot of stuff I was going to do to the cars. Supposed to be calmer (down to 20mph) from about 9 tonight so should be a less disturbed night than last night.
Hopefully next weekend will be better. We've got the kids and grandkids coming down for the Christmas fayre in the marina.

Everyone at work has started praying for a white Christmas here under the snow sheild in Burnley. Basically because the powers that be at the contract he decided that there will be full parking enforcement in our area on Sat 26th December, so if we can get lots of snow on the ground they have to pay us to sit in the office all day
Absolutely no sign of anything tangible in terms of snow in the near future, except for northern areas of UK at elevation. However, there is increasing chatter about positive signs for January. Various respected mid-range forecasters, and now even the MetOffice are warning of increasing signs for blocking, cold, northerly winds in that timescape. Obviously this is science in its infancy, but it's hopeful.

I moved from London to the Burnley area 12 years ago and the first Christmas I was up it snowed in London and not the North West! I wasn't happy! I haven't been that impressed with the winters up North since!Anthony Micallef said:

Remember that the South tends to get colder (as Mr GrimNasty has been correctly pointing out) because we're closer to the continent, which is less effected by the Atlantic. The NW, although being further north, and so should be colder, is often not. The same reason why GetCarter (much further NW) can often see snow, but very rarely does it lie.
Nevermind, winter starts tomorrow - so we have 3 months to hope for snow, and it snows more often at Easter than Xmas!

Well well well, a local 'forecaster' has predicted a potential for a cold/snowy snap for the Island around mid-December, which would be our first proper snowfall for nearly three years. May be prompting more scenes like the below from March 2013.
However, on more mundane matters, continuing to get battered by storms, but things are forecast to calm down through the week. Hope so, 'cos I'm eating at the Rockmount on Friday night! A rather fine restaurant it is too.
