So i'm told

Well I asked for a test ride to my local yamaha Dealer asking via email if I can test ride the new R1.

Their reply:
Hi Matthew

Thanks for your enquiry.
Unfortunately due to the stock situation with R1’s, ie Yamaha have sold out, we do not have a demo of this model.

If there is anything else I can help with or you wish to discuss further please let me know.
Kind Regards

So seem's apart from calling various Dealers which I honestly can's be arsed to do as i'm in no rush I will have to wait until next spring for a test ride. thats fine with me. I'll just have to wait.
Thing is the only 2 bikes I really fancy is the Panigale 1299 and new R1. I don't want to wait another 2-4 years if the rumors are true about no new Blade coming out until 2017-2019 ( more like 18-19)

So seem's the new R1 is rather popular, or they yamaha under estimated how many they are going to sell.
I know dealers will have them in stock but won't be allowing test rides if they are selling without the need for one. But for me a test ride is essential to see if it's what I want. but that's just me

Who said sports bike sells are not selling

Dealers do talk rubbish, my local dealer had 2 when they first came onto the market, they still have one in the showroom when I was there in early August.

I know up until a weeks ago they had 2. having bikes is one thing letting people test ride is another.

I may see who else is a dealer local to me and see what they can do

I understand the 1299 will be a little more exclusive but before I buy I want to get a idea of what else is out their and what they have to offer.

I'm going the the NEC bike show in Dec. Will have a look about at what else might be worth looking at but really all the interests me is the 1299 and R1. And if the new blade was out sooner that would be again top of my list

In fairness to the R1, it's probably the biggest shake up the sports bike market has had since the S1000RR. You could forgive Yamaha even for underestimating the appeal of the bike, given that we're always being told that the sports bike segment is shrinking as buyers get older and look for softer, slower bikes that they can rest their kites on. I've seen a couple on the roads so far, and they make quite an impression with that dramatic styling and that exhaust noise. Worth waiting for, I'd say. Perhaps get a big bang R1 in the meantime, and flip it when the new R1 is available?

Or go for the Ducati,Aprilia or BMW, all of which are fantastic bikes too, got to say I'm seriously tempted by a new R1 myself though, that and the RSV4 are the only contenders for my next bike at the moment. The thing is, I've always liked Fireblades myself, I had hoped Honda would have actually done something with it for next Year, but it's going to be even longer?.

I just can't get over how minging the R1 front is. Race-inspired blah blah and I know I wouldn't have to look at it while I'm riding the damn thing but still. The headlights come across as such an afterthought.

Sympathise with your position OP but fk it buy the 1299 instead.

On the flip side I think it looks brilliant!

I went for Pani 1199S - 2 years old, mint, low mileage, known owner, and around 10k cheaper than the new 1299S price for the spec I wanted.

Not had a Ducati before, so it is a toe in the water. If I love the whole experience, might go for a 1299S in the future. If not, I've had less money tied up in the 1199S

(Yes, I know some will wk on about how the 1299S "destroys" the 1199S and other such kleenex remarks. The 1199S is bloody good, and a solid entry to this sort of bike for me.)

I don't agree - It produces less power than the S1000RR, Aprilia RF or 1299. The linked brakes are generally being panned and the engine doesn't have much torque below 7k rpm which will make the RSV, 1299 and S1000RR better road bikes. Laptimes are much of a muchness with the competitors too. They seem to have the electronics nailed but otherwise it's likely no better or worse overall than the competitors and certainly doesn't 'move the goal posts'.

My view is that there is a lot of pent up Yamaha and R1 fanboi demand. A loyal following that have been disappointed with the 2007 model being a bit revvy and the 2009 model a bit overpriced and meehhh with less development than the Fireblade. Those hanging on to older models or waiting for the next decent top flight R1 now have the first excuse in many years to jump out and buy one. Personally I still find them ugly and there are zero aesthetic nods to the R1 lineage, which is a shame, but objectively it seems to fix all of the issues with the old R1 and is genuinely 'fresh'.

I think there may also be a fair number of Jap bike fans who have been waiting for a cutting edge 180bhp+ road bike that's not European and not the ugly ZX10R.

REMAL - I don't think you'd go too far wrong with a 1299 after the Blade as it looks to have a lot of the character of an 1198 and a lot of the usability of the Blade. Ducatis always make you 'work' for the performance - especially vs a Blade, which flatters and covers mistakes rather than exploits and highlights them! They are very rewarding to ride fast though - especially for experienced riders, even if from a confidence point of view, you might end up slower point to point than on the old Blade.

The dealer network is also decent for Ducatis, with lot of specialists too. That rules out Aprilia and MV offerings if that is important.

Are you trying the new S1000RR as it looks like a much more attractive proposition than the 2010/2012 models?

Hold out and get a test ride before jumping in even if that means a fair journey to find one.

They're not pretty bikes - functional is how I'd describe the 'looks' but they're fairly comfortable and roomy for larger riders.

They remind me a lot of the Duc 1198 - a little rabid feeling, eager to rev and try to lift the front in the lower gears despite the loooonnnngggggg standard gearing, stiff, accurate and even quicker steering (my 'S" had the forged wheels) and make a distinctive noise - you won't mistake the noise for a zx10/blade/S1000/whatever.
Obviously far less awful low rev clatter and they don't die at 9000rpm either - this was my true hate with the 1198, nothing but chain lash until 3000 rpm then all done 6000rpm later. Well, that and the truely st tank range.

Is a 1299 worth an R1 + £2000 (or an R1M + £4000 for the S - gulp!)?

I can understand why some would (and have) said yes - very nice bikes.

Yamaha UK have sold out. Dealers will still have them. Sometimes bikes even go backwards into the system. I think Yamaha have deliberately restricted supply this year and will bring more in next year to do sales battle with the revised ZX10, new GSXR and maybe new FireBlade.

My local dealer (Pro Bike in Newbury) had two; a blue one and a red one and they've still got the red one tempting me every time I wander in the shop.

They're a combined Suzuki and Yamaha franchise whose owners prefer their Suzukis in truth and they are selling GSXR1000's like hot cakes because they are much cheaper and people have just realised this is the last opportunity to buy a non ABS superbike - Suzuki GB have now sold out of non ABS GSXR1000's.

Wait until the bike shows - only a few months away.

I've not ridden one yet, but I really thought the new R1 was an ugly little thing and had nothing redeeming to save it, aesthetically. That was until a mate of mine turned up on his new R1-M. What a bit of kit! In the metal and carbon fibre, it looks superb. I can see why Yamaha may have sold out of their UK allocation. However, I'd be put that there are still some unregistered bikes about.

I'm not going to rush anything, as I said I'm in no rush.

I'm intending to keep my blade and use it on track only. Well thats the thought at the moment and even the wife is happy with that (Considering I have a few other toys in my garage).

as for the BM 1000rr i did test ride this back in 2010 and would like to see how it's changed over the last 5 years. So that would be on the cards at some point for a test ride.
