I've asked the same Q on my project thread really, but thought I'd have a better shot at getting some info here.

To treat some rust on my E36 the plan currently is to wire brush, Kurust, then paint with Hammerite direct to metal.

Is there any point adding this stuff into the process before the Kurust?:

I've not used it before, but wondered if I would get any benefit from doing so?

No. It is effectively the same as Kurust but gel rather than liquid.

I did wonder. However, since I will be laying on my back and doing this above me, the gel might be a better bet under the car. Kurust will drip like mad I reckon?

Krust isn't very good apparently as it's water based and doesn't actually remove the rust properly.

Have a look at bilt hamber products. They are by far the best.

I would go back to bare metal then remove the rust using their deox gel. Then paint it with their electrox spray followed by some 3M Shutz underseal.

Never heard of any of those products but will look them up.

Why are they better than the Hammerite/Waxoil for rust proofing?

Had a look at the Bilt Hamber gear, buying the Electrox and the Deox. Curious though about the Waxoil spray, should be fine with that, no? I prefer a clear sealant so that I can keep a better eye on things.

Anyone used blue steel or aqua steel on there car? Its a rust convertor that we use offshore all the time, keep meaning to get some to try out at home.

Never heard of those either! I'm genuinely interested though in whether there's any real reason not to use the Waxoil spray (or the other Waxoil one). If I use that Electrox first then it really should suffice going on what I've read.

Interested to hear of any evidence to the contrary before I go ahead.

The spray waxoil doesn't last, washes off to easy. The proper tins are much better, heat it up first then paint it on.

I used waxoil in the and then Schutz over the top as it gives the oem rubber finish. Part came off the front sill so this time I used POR15 on this area and going to schutz over the top as well so it looks OEM.

POR15 seems to get good reviews.

i find the best way to get rid of rust is to stick it on Ebay.

I would recomment the bilt hamber deox gel, used it on a MGB (so a good test!) and it did really good job, took it right back to clean, (if a bit pitted) steel! Better than i was expecting.

+1 for Bilt Hamber

Way better than the stuff from Halfords, look at the full range not just the rust gel stuff.

Meh, snake oil. Put it on, leave it for a week and then scrape back and see how your metal looks under the magic stuff.
Strip it, remove the rust and prime it properly.

I would recommend a flap wheel/disc instead of the wire brush, get down to some nice shiny metal.

I use mechanical abrasion (flap wheel) to remove rust and then Phosphoric Acid - google it.

I take it using the Hammerite paint over the Electrox primer will be fine though? I wanted to use the clear waxoil stuff as I'm a bit reluctant to cake it all in thick, sticky black underseal but it sounds like I may have to suck it up on that score.
