Long time lurker, first time poster...

Ordered a new F10 back in June; spec is:

  • Singapore Grey
  • Sakhir Orange Interior
  • Reverse Camera
  • Powered Boot
  • Comfort Access
  • H/K Audio
  • Universal Remote
  • Standard 19" Wheels (345)
A few questions, if I may?

1. Would it be worth me getting a set of 20" wheels and doing something with wheel changes / snow tyres for the winter(s)?

2. My BMW history is - E61 535d (tuned), E92 M3, F12 640i - I have to say that of all these, I think the 535 was my favourite - While the M3 was fun, it started to creak alarmingly and BMW said that they'd likely charge me to fix it as it was likely an 'adjustment' that needed to be made rather than a fault to be fixed. The 6 has been pretty much a let down - while the soft-top is fun, there's just not enough power when overtaking, unless you're in sports plus, which makes the steering oppressively heavy. Thoughts on how I'll find the F10 after that history?!

3. Best place for insurance for the thing? Clean license / no accidents, 33 years old, still being quoted £700 a year - read someone on here got it for about £350 or so?!

4. Ordered on June 29th, had to chase for information constantly - was finally told the car would be sent to production last week - checked today, it actually went into production this Monday (31st August) - I've asked repeatedly for the VIN so I can track it myself, only got it after been quite arsey on the phone. Is this normal?! How long after production starts can I realistically expect delivery?

Cheers guys!

Congratulations on the new car - had mine for over three years now and just approaching 50K

If you think that you would want a set of wheels and snow tyres for winter, you may still be able to negotiate a discount on a new set.

I bought a set with my E90 M3 and got a 20% discount. I live in the SE and only ended up using them for one winter so they were in excellent condition when sold but as OEM wheels, I re-couped a substantial percentage of the original outlay.

I then didn't bother with winter wheels and tyres when I got the M5, so when the weather did this....

I couldn't move the car for a week and had to use the Galactic Emperors car biggrin

I see these are currently 0% finance at the moment. Anyone getting decent discounts and this rate included?

You should get 12-14k off one + the 0% I think there is a fab deal on the M6GC as well

Cheers for the heads up on the wheels. Considering the delay I'll certainly enquire as to discounts...

Got about £11,500 off list and the service plan for £500 rather than £1,050, and reasonable trade in on my 640.

Congrats on the purchase!

Insurance I'm with Aviva costs £450 a year.

You'll be just fine with the M5 everything is independently adjustable steering/dampers/throttle/gear change/traction control, you can then save 2 of your favourite settings on the steering wheel buttons M1 and M2.

The power is endless and the surge it gives quite startling, you'll have another 260hp more than the 640i to play with and that makes a difference and most M5's dyno nearer to 600hp stock, they are crazy fast and will live with most things from 60mph upwards including GTR's/AMG GT etc...

But they can also waft, the ride is excellent but at the press of a button it turns into a tyre shredding monster.

I think you're gonna like it!

I have a new set of the 20 in Competition wheels with brand new tyres available as a part exchange for the standard 19 in wheels if you are interested? This won't give you an extra set of wheels but a nicer set of 20's rather than the 19's. The Comp wheels look great are are normally only available as per of the Competition package.

I had my VIN very early on but couldn't find a way as a UK customer to track (outside of dealer systems). I was very fortunate however as my dealer is very proactive and would send me updates every time the status changed. For your reference these were my status updates:

20/08/15 5300 Pre Assembly Start
21/08/15 5500 Assembly Complete
24/08/15 8200 Released to Carrier - Left Factory
27/08/15 9605 Pre EU Port of Exit - Arrived In Zeebrugge
27/08/15 9620 At Sea
29/08/15 9630 Port of Entry - Arrived at Immingham

I've just had word that it arrived at the dealer this morning and I'll be collecting it Tuesday!!biggrin

Exciting times!

The wait is killing me... Would have been 3 weeks today but after contacting my dealer last week he got back to me saying it's been put back 2 week.

Hope it's not going to keep getting delayed!

OP your wait seems to be longer than normal...?

That's like the b@stard love child (other than the Comfort Access) of my 2 F10 M5's

Nice car history. I had an E60 535d M Sport (DMS Tuned) many years ago & it was certainly a giggle. Traded that for an E60 M5 that i again took down to DMS for some fettling.

Mine has the standard 19" wheels, clad in MPSS rubber & i've and no grip/traction issues in Summer or Winter. I'm sure if you suffer with consistently bad Winter weather then perhaps Winter Tyres would be of benefit, but even in Lancashire it's not usually that bad & thus i've never bothered & given this M5 will be the longest i've had a particular vehicle as i usually get bored, i've never been a fan of additional wheels.

I'm insured with Tesco for around £300, but am older & my car's garaged.

Congrats on the order.

I collected my Singapore car on June 24th

My spec was similar to yours although I went with black leather (as have young kids).

20" wheels
Reverse camera
Comfort Access
HK Audio
Multifunctional seats
Privacy Glass
Split Fold Rear Seats
Service Pack

Just over 2 months later and i've covered 3,200 miles.

Car isn't used daily so, weekend miles only.

Can't fault the car at all. Only thing I would suggest (and wished I had done the same) the front of the car is very square - and as such prone to stone chips easily. My car has a few already, not to mention a few chips in the windscreen.. Its getting detailed this weekend - time to get some decent wax on it, to try and protect the body work and leather better, but some 3M stuff would have been better - too late now.

The real time traffic is very good - everytime I follow it - I don't hit traffic at all - When I first got the car, I would ignore it and end up in jams!
Performance is good - car is quick no doubt - I ride a motorbike daily into London - so my sense of speed is using that as a reference.
Its comfy, MPG isn't that bad (comparable to the X5 4.0D I traded in).

Only downside are a few rattles that I can hear on occasion - but not bothered to investigate yet.

Am thinking about changing the front grills, side gills and exhaust tips to black - never been a lover of the chrome.

With regards to the build and dealer updates - My sales person would email me daily with updates, I knew when the car was being made, when it was complete, when it hit the port in Germany, when it arrived in the UK ( I was even advised on all the registrations that were allocated to the dealer at the time the car landed, so I could pick one).

Can't fault the dealer at all, much better than the AUC dealer I had used for the X5!

Hope you enjoy yours,

Steve

That's excellent - my dealer says it was Released to Carrier, so hopefully we're looking at - what, maybe 10 days or so as long as the ferries are consistent. Very nice of your dealer to keep you updated like that, mine seemed to stop caring completely once they had the deposit. This is the first new car I've ever bought and wanted to make it more of an 'event' - like going to the BMW factory myself to collect - making a little holiday of it. But no such luck!

Love that picture... does any man need TWO F10's?!? Love it.

I'm in Yorkshire so the weather will be much of a muchness. Thanks for the heads up on Tesco, I'll certainly give them ago - mine's also garaged. Do you have other people insured on it - often sticking my (72 year old) father as a named driver on the insurance has dropped it significantly even though he'd very rarely (e.g. never!) drive it.

On both the M3 and the 6, driving down the motorway on the way home from the dealer, a large stone was kicked up by a van / lorry in front. Both times. The thing flew up as if in slow motion. On the 6 it's tucked out of the way, on the M3 it was RIGHT in the eye-line. Drove me utterly mad! Some decent protection wouldn't go amiss...

The (cream / custom) leather in the 6 and M3 got pretty messed up from my jeans, I've learned the lesson now and will be using the leather protection stuff.

Sounds like there are a lot of more communicative dealers out there!

Another Singapore Grey / Sakhir Orange here, nice choice of colours wink

I've had mine just coming up to nine months now and every day I get to go out in it, I still get a big smile on my face. It is a fantastic car with probably too much power for every day use but will pass most other cars out there without any trouble. It really is a Jekyll and Hyde car. From sedate cruiser to mental motor in a press of a button!

I've just had my renewal through at £391 from Aviva but went with Direct Line who quoted £351 I think it was. This was then upped by £48 to cover the adaptive LEDs. I'm 38, 11 years NCD, clean licence and the car is on a driveway.

I would say it would be 2-3 weeks from build start to collection. They are usually fairly accurate to the predicted delivery times. I had a daily screen shot sent through from the dealer's internal system so I was tracking it every step of the way. Released to Carrier I think means it's left the plant and will be on a train to the port of exit.

Had you bought a set of winter wheels and tyres, you'd have been able to use it throughout, as I did with my E60.

Although i'm in the don't bother camp when it comes to Winter Wheels, surely if it was something you wanted it would be better to get some aftermarket wheels & clad them with a decent set of Winter Tyres rather than pay the ridiculous premium BMW charge?

I've bought a number of sets directly from BMW and have always thought they were well priced compared to the cost of the tyres alone... but we aren't talking M5 sets.

I'd be willing to pay a slight premium in any case for ease of supply and assurance that they are OEM fitment, no need to speak to insurers, etc.

When I got my m5 in 2012, I was quoted about £4000 by BMW for a set of winter wheels and tyres (though I think that might have been for the 20s). Needless to say, I decided that I'd rather not.

We haven't had any snow to test the car for the past 3 years, but it has been absolutely fine in heavy rain / low temps. The Pilot Super Sports are superb.

By contrast, our e70 x5 (on 20" runflats) is awful in these conditions, so we went for the official winter wheels/tyres, which BMW store during the warmer months. They totally transform the handling in the wet / cold / snow.
