Even with the numerous in car media option there are today, CD, DAB, SD card, streaming etc, I do still like to listen to good old BBC radio. Quite often I'm tuned into BBC2 or BBC4, some great programming on both of these channels.

That is until I hear the dreary condescending and preaching sounds of a religious type spouting their misguided views onto me. mad To the fair the BBC live up to their reputation and have a wide and diverse pool from various religions but cripes does it annoy me. Each to their own perversion should really not be broadcast of state media. It's an instant switch off for me, I can't hit that button quick enough to change over. I simply don't think it has a place on the BBC. I've no problem with them having thier own station miles away from everybody else but why ye gods do you have to drop it into the middle of a good mornings programming?

Just me or does anybody else find it infuriating?

I find it infuriating that they will not allow Humanist/secular speakers, only religious ones.

Yes, I listen to R4's Today on the commute each morning.

Two things i find strange about it: thought for the day, and betting tips.

And I'm finding naughtie and humpreys increasingly wearing with their brow-beating and hectoring .

No - it's only 5 minutes. I can live with it. There are far too many other real issues to get upset about than this.

That's almost exactly what I was going to say smile

Often the final message resonates resoundly - it just doesn't need the god bothering stuff before it.

I have my own beliefs, confused as they are. And its quite nice to hear the different religions pov on things, expecially when they rarly vary!

Agreed. This morning was particularly irritating with some plank doing the whole:

1. here is a common modern story.
2. it reminds me of the X story in the bible.
3. perhaps we can learn something here.

I noticed that regardless of the faith, they all use some similar phrases focusing around the 'speed' of 'modern' life, not having enough 'time' to think, about things, being 'busy', 'rushing' about.

I guess if you get paid to 'pray' and 'listen', then the above makes sense.
But I find it odd that what 90% of the population (both now and way back when) might consider to just be normal life, preachers think is a problem that must be raised at every opportunity.

Anything that makes you stop and contemplate is a good thing. It doesn't mean you have to agree with what has been said - but taking time out to think is always good.

Agreed! It's not as if the 'great and the good' were unaware of the scourge of gambling, but to promote it (via racing tips) and even devote a prime time show to it (National Lottery) seems odd, given the way we treat smoking and drug use. Imho.

I like some 'Thought for the Day' pieces, particularly the guy from the Sikh Messenger and the chap from the Iona community - only because it illustrates how much different faiths have in common. Cannot stand rabbi Lionel - far too chummy with his luvvie friends. Good jokes though.

Agreed. The holy part of Chris Evans breakfast show seems to be full of religious types trying to be trendy and engaging. Occasionally they have a Buddhist on who actually talks sense.

The Radio 4 slot is not called "Prayer for the Day", is it. It's called "Thought For the Day".

Here's a list of the regular contributors and their backgrounds -

As you can see, Rabbi Lionel Blue has not been a regular contributor for a long time - although on rare occasions they give him a go.

Very happy atheist here, but I still quite like listening to Thought for the Day. It's part of the routine really and its not like they are saying anything terribly inflammatory.

I do agree that a Humanist appearance every now and then would be a good thing for fairness to all "beliefs" though i don't actually think the moral to their story would be much different from the current crop.

Regardless, it's somebody that believes in magical things being given a pedestal on mainstream media.

There are people out there who would allow this to annoy them if it was 5 whole seconds.

They belong to the "uncontrolled anger at everything" brigade.

They seriously need to take up some meditative activity or else they will succumb to an aneurysm or heart attack.

Funny that... I don't see Richard Dawkins name on that list, but rather a few people who claim to be able to offer a useful thought for the day when they probably believe in a magical being that invented itself!

Out dated and not required thank you very much.

And I think the opposite.

If you don't require it - don't listen to it (as I'm sure you already don't).

Can't really avoid it when listening to the CE breakfast show. Unless I turn it off and then guess when the ramblings have come to an end and I don't mean Evans' either.

I look forward to IS getting a slot. All as bad as each other.

It's easy to let things slide and just ignore stuff for fear of challenging. I can only hope someone senior in the BBC eventually sees sense and get's this type of rubbish off the air.
