Well went out to the Skope Classic at Ruapuna today and what a day. Just about drizzling early on but then the sun came out and it was damn hot.

Easily the best day ive spent watching motor racing, really makes you want to get out there and have a go yourself.

So many mint cars around, personal favourites were

1968 Chevron B8 - apparently it had a BMW 2002 motor but I cant confirm that, either way it was in the front of the V8 field

1969 TVR Tuscan V8 - goes without saying really but was also damn fast

1960 Type 14 Lotus Elite - was at the back of the pack but just looked so mint and looked really controllable as he chucked it around the corners

One of the MG midgets, there were three there but only one really stood out, was well faster than all the other midgets and Bs as well as looking brilliant in bright red lowered on minilites with shining chrome

Lawrie Steeres MGBGT - only a 4 cylinder and not overly competitive but just looked mint

1912 De Dion Curtis - 8.2 litres of Curtis aeroplane engine complete with most of the motor being external just totally different

1926 Bugatti Type 35B - just one from Gavin Bains stable of really expensive cars

1985 TWR Bastos Rover Vitesse - Former british touring car and one of only 4 in the world. Alan Dippie only recently bought it and was still getting the hang of it but once he did it was the match for anything else out there, as well as sounding brilliant

1974 Datsun 1200 SSS - pretty stock looking SSS but it didnt go like it, solid preformance near the front of the pack

1959 Anglia 100E - bit different to everything else that was there and reminicent of an early time before there were minis and M3s everywhere in their respective saloon car classes

1975 Triumph Dolomite Sprint - Middle of the pack perfomance but was painted up in period racing colours complete with the big flares etc and totally looked the part

Dissapointments were
There was a lotus europa in the programme that I havnt seen yet, Allan Dippies MGBGTV8 shat itself yesterday before I saw it running. Have seen both cars before but still nice to see them again.

To anyone who wasnt there you missed a brilliant day. Sorry for the length of the post but just going through the programme picking cars I liked

Having been to a couple of Skopes before it IS a great event.... IMHO the best event to watch in NZ is the Whittakers Classic at Manfield closely followed by the skope Classic at 'puna..... both events offer so much racing and variety for the money!
I do know most of the cars you speak of and have seen them before... the only two I haven't seen I think are the Lotus Elite (I'd LOVE to see that, what colour was it?) My father used to own one so they're dear to my heart I've also not seen the Bastos Machine before but have seen many photos.

I saw Alan Dippie's MGBV8 at Manfield and have plenty of pics and vids of it... it's by far the quickest AND the tidiest MGB I've ever seen racing.... it'd be able to keep up with a few of the bigger boys for sure. That Dolly Sprint I saw at Skope a few years back and he was blitzing everyone in his field (he may have been racing in a slower class) but that car was rapid.... but also suffered reliability issues (blew its guts on the sunday) and so may have detuned since then. That Tuscan V8 is owned by a Canadian who keeps it over here and comes out yearly to race it at Skope.... THATS dedication... the fact that it's quick goes without saying.

I did miss it, I know but never mind... there's always other years..... I hope to be bragging on this board about my trip to the GFOS in a year or two's time because that's a MUST SEE

Paul if you want pics/vids of that Alan Dippie MGB, I've got a couple here I think.... can bring them down to chch on CD when I'm down at the end of the month if you like.

First Skope Ive been too as Ive never been in chch for it before and Ive never been to manfield (yet) so will have to take your word on it

The sprint didnt seem that impressive speedwise, was a nice alfasud ahead of it (running TRD wheels :S) plus a couple of other things.

I know Alan Dippies V8 pretty well, him and my dad are friends as they both have TF's. Alas dads budget for cars isnt quite as big as his . I remember years ago when that V8 used to be blue and owned by Paul Panel it was damn quick even then. I still prefer his MGC GTS replica though, probably not quite as fast but its just got a better look to it. He only had the two V8s (B and Rover) there today, looking forward to seeing him drift his yellow B roadster around dunedin in a couple of weeks.

Dont worry about pics ive got plenty of them already but will have to meet up for a drink
