It depends on the job. My work revolves around being there for clients if they're worried and they have a different e-mail to reps/routine office stuff. I can't tell them when they can or can't be worried. If I notice I've got an e-mail, I'll take a look and out of courtesy, will nearly always drop a quick holding line in response if the situation requires it. That doesn't mean I'm tied to it though.

I work different timezones, so Friday nights for California and Sunday afternoons for Australia, only get a few enquiries and things to deal with on email, takes about half an hour or so, maybe the odd call to make if it's easier to call rather than email.

I dont work weekends, so I wouldnt spend Sunday dinner between a roast and a forecast.

The only time I don't check it is when I am asleep and even then I check it when I get up for a toilet break in the night (I use the phone as a torch to find the toilet). Sad I know but I am one of those that cannot have unread emails.
I work for a startup, Snr Management, Sales.

Reply to emails every day including holidays. Business owner so don't really see it as work and certainly don't think of it as intrusive.

I would just point out that I was absolutely not texting clients after the F1 this morning and still dealing with emails until 7pm tonight..... And I'm not at all annoyed that my clients didn't get back to me for many hours meaning I couldn't get on with the things I wanted to get done before tomorrow.............

Yes, all the time. Mostly to monitor systems, sales reporting and stay on top of any developing situations.

I'm in a senior position for a small business. We have people on site six days a week and I manage our IT systems so often have to dial in out of hours.

I'm remunerated pretty well and given decent flexibility from my MD, as such I think it's fair that I offer flexibility in dealing with my areas of responsibility.

I'm in constant email contact from dawn til dusk - self employed specialist cars so kind of goes with the territory. Currently considering switching off totally on Sundays.....

Really interesting this as I was talking about it just earlier.

I have a Small IT company (6 staff) but the buck stops here. I do check my emails every day but in recent years I have only acted on one if it was an "emergency" and definitely couldn't wait till the office opened, basically stopping a problem getting worse!!

I was not always like this though and would be constantly replying to everyone and then unable to ever switch off, Mrs Dan got very irritated and to be honest she spoke sense and the above is what we agreed on.

My second business is a Micro Pub and thankfully I dont get any emails about that, its more of a hobby.

Well, its been interesting to read how some people switch off at 5pm.

I run an Managed Service Provider. Our services have monitoring on them and we have to be very responsive to systems and servers we have provided our customers, so I have quite possibly a terrible habit of checking my phone everytime it beeps.

Nope, phones and email go off at 17:00 on a Friday and get checked about 08:45 on a Monday. I've always been keen to keep work and my own time separate. Once you reply out of hours people develop an expectation, if they know you're closed they will wait until Monday.
This.
Do I think about issues to solve in 'my own time'? Yes. Work on stuff out of these hours? Yes, in terms of musing creative solutions. Funny , but my best 'aha! / consolidation-of' ideas seems to happen in an early morning shower.

Is all this time mine free to ignore 'work' in? Oh yes. Formal response can always await formal hours, and the sanguine view on reflection.

Generally no unless there is a severe problem or issue.

As a regular occurrence it's just mad, but like everything it depends on remuneration. 40k pa no chance, 150k pa yes I'll do it.

Who do think will receive promotion to reach the 150k goal?

That's a red herring, otherwise each and every Dave in the office who's there before you no matter what time you're in, and leaves after the cleaners have long since packed up their stuff would be the CEO of the world. But he's not, he's still Team Leader for SME because he's shown he's willing to put time in, but not constructively balance his time.

The ones who do all the legwork generally arent the ones who ask for the promotion because it's not about how much time you spend on work, it's the differences you make to it.

Not the person who simply emails everyone and replies to everyone at silly o'clock.

I work in IT so I have little choice but to receive emails out of hours as some of it may be alerts or things I need to know about.

I don't sit watching the phone, but if I spot I have new emails I'll skim the subject and if it needs dealing with I shall do so.

There is a balance however and I don't think for one second that in any company that looks out for the welfare of its workers, that the times you respond to emails is used as any kind of benchmark of how good you are at your job.

If you are running your own business then what would you prefer no emails or emails - this day and age communications is the name of the game and plenty other companies out there chasing work. prioritise - not all emails need to be answered there and then....

same with work - if you are employed in a role that requires that you respond to any out of hours activity - servers eguipment etc then thats the nature of the job. However if you are in a role thats 9-5 mon to fri then why look at emails ? if your not required to deal with anything out of office then get that out of office autoreply set up. thats what its there for.

Working in IT it's quite surprising how many people ask "Can I get my work email on my phone?".

We have hundreds of staff and I see it for all manner of ages and job roles.

It's interesting as there is talk of EU laws coming in about restricting this kind to ensure employee welfare, but from where I sit a lot of people want this ability.

No its not, and clearly its not all about working 24/7 and arse licking but who do you think the CEO will consider for replacing him in the future, the person who just does enough or the person that puts in a bit more effort. If the two people are identical in every other way there is only one winner.
