Hifi or Home Cinema I guess?

You know, when people see your living room or whatever and ask about all the equipment and you decide to put something on to show 'em what it does smile

Home Cinema wise i'll always pop House Of The Flying Daggers in.... The scene with the Blind Dancer is great for showing off Surround Sound!

As my set up is very old,so are the demo discs that show it off to its best potential.

Gladiator for home cinema, first DVD I ever bought, for the DTS sound.
Big yellow taxi by counting crows, just sounds great to me,that bass line

The invisible man by Queen. Sounds just right on my old kit.

Either Baraka or Home, on my Kuro is still jaw-dropping stuff, even after all these years.

Or for more mainstream stuff I use Gravity, as the blackness of space is the Kuro's bread and butter.

The scene in Oblivion leading up to the 'rope break' bass drop. The picture quality and 2.35:1 aspect shows off my 'scope screen and projector, the surround sound and bass drop show off my speakers/subs.

For music it depends on who is visiting, but generally a DTS disc I have of Queen, an Eagles concert or Eric Clapton.

It's a bit of a cliché but it nicely shows the depths my subs go down to, which seems to have the desired effect of the demo. smile

Opening scenes in Saving Private Ryan for video/surround.

Dire Straits Brothers in Arms was the first CD I bought and still shows up a good or bad system.

Another vote for 'House of flying daggers' here, AV wise. The shoot out in 'Heat' is pretty awesome too.

I have a few "test tracks" I use for hi-fi:

1. Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
2. Enya - Fairytale
3. Madonna - Frozen
4. Genesis - Supper's Ready
5. AC/DC - Shoot to Thrill
6. J.S. Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor

If it can cope with those then I'm happy.

For Hi-Fi, I've always ended up using Yes - Owner of a lonely heart

Hi Fi is simple.....Eruption by Van Halen or Tina Turner 'What's Love got to do with it".

Home Cinema, The Lego Movie, Swordfish with the ball bearings or my Dolby Labs Test Disc for a 2 minute HD blast.

Prodigy - Firestarter, this is what they used to use at Which magazine, really will show up a sloppy speaker very quickly..

redface Great track but so poorly recorded. Even when it came out is was not hard to hear the poor mixing and the tape hiss.

Bearing in mind that demoing to friends is not the same as demoing for me.

I use Rumer with 'Thankful' as most people won't have heard a recorded piano that sounds like a piano, and I point out all the detail in the voice; how you can hear her beathe, when she puts her lips together, the creak of the chair when the pianist moves etc.

I also use the MTV live version of 'Nutshell' by Alice in Chains. I like the way it builds but each element is still distinctive, the bass line is amazing and it actually sounds like you are there.

For films I use the chapter of LOTR where Frodo gets taken to the Elves. It's like a short film by itself. It starts with characters talking and the atmosphere of the woods, then Liv Tyler shows up, and ther's a nice visual effect and choir music, then the baddies announce their arrival with that harsh shriek. There's a chase and then the scene where she does her magic chant that bounces round the speakers before the the stream rises up and rushes into the horses for the climax.

For home cinema I normally get out the Heat disc. The scene where they take down the security vans is a good indicator of quality. Bullet shells falling to the ground, the bass of explosions and lots of fine sound details to pick up on.

For Hi-Fi I usually crank up a spot of Orbital. Lush 3-1
