Folks

I need some new work shirts and was hoping for a recommendation. You'd think this would be easy enough but alas no!

Price range of about £20-25 per shirt max, I tried the Thomas Nash ones from Debenhams a little while ago and thought the quality was quite poor - not much better than supermarket ones. I then tried their 'St George by Duffer' ones which were better on quality but they were an absolute b*****d to iron.

So over to you, good people!

M&S Sartorial twill.

Often on a deal to buy 2 at a time.

Very soft, get better with wear/washing.

Double cuff, removable collar bones.

Also available in 2" longer.

Charles Tyrwhitt every time. Excellent shirts, you can specify arm length, cuff style and overall shirt length as well as collar and chest size etc, almost a made to measure shirt plus there's a six month (??) guarantee even if you've worn them. Last time I looked they were £100 for four but they do special offers every month.

Thanks guys.

Meant to specify has to be button cuff not cufflink!

Will check out Charles whatshisface, trouble is I really prefer to be able to try on, though if the returns policy is ok that's not so bad!

Tyrwhitt shirts are 'roomy'. If you're 'normal' go for slim fit.

They have stores up and down the country where you can try on.

Go for the non-irom shirts. You won't look back. You will still have to iron, but are so easy! I live abroad, and still get all workshirts from here.

Massive fan of M&S shirts, particularly the sartorial range, but the range down with button cuffs and none removable collar bones are nice too at about £30 a pop full price. Great quality and options for normal, slim and tailored fit.

Keep meaning to try Charles Tyrwitt though - they look good and are definitely VFM. They do have shops, so you can try on.

If you've got a Costco card the shirts they sell are pretty good. Mine have lasted forever and hardly need any ironing.

I find Hawes and Curtis better quality than CT for about the same price, worth a look

Another vote for M&S Satorial. They can take a battering and are always great to iron. They also respond well to "Businessman Ironing" (i.e. when you hang the shirt up in a hot hotel shower and let the steam do the work hehe)

Bought some TM Lewin shirts on their 4 for 100 offer. They are alright, but generally harder to wash and iron to a high standard.

I think TM Lewin shirts have really dropped off in terms of quality recently.

Charles Tyrwhitt are pretty low quality. I have used them before, and TM Lewin. Both very similar. Advantages are the range of measurements and a small but good range of non-iron shirts (which you still have to iron but don't crease as much), and excellent delivery and returns policy.

However stack them next to a decent shirt, and I include even the m&s ones as "decent" and you will see the quality just isn't as good, - material very thin, stitching very poor and they don't last very well.

I don't know if you had a bad batch or something, but that's not my experience. I find CTS shirts to be well made and hard wearing - they retain shape & colour well and iron beautifully.
They're not top-notch, bespoke quality but excellent for the price.

I agree with you. With TM Lewin, I like the fact I can pretty much spec a nice fitting shirt for my frame (old school shirts are very baggy on me) at pretty reasonable, (though not super cheap, usually order when a deal is on - 4 for £100), price. Plus there's a lot of shops around in London, and do a fairly good mail order. I've been getting non-iron, slim fit and initially (about 4-5 yrs ago) the range and quality was great, a nice stiff cotton. Now I've noticed the pattern choices are a bit duff, and some material very thin.

Smart enough for my job, but I'll have a look at some of the above options to see if the value/quality is similar.

Not a fan of CT - poor quality and fit IMHO.
I wear either Jaeger or Simon Carter. Expensive normally but go into TK Maxx and you'll often find both brands for around £25 a shirt.

I've got a load of TM Lewin non-iron shirts and they quality of those is much better than their standard ones. They aren't non-iron of course unless you like looking like a tramp, but they are easy to iron

Closest store to me is 50 miles each way so would want to order online - would you say CT's slim fit is more like a normal fit at high street stores?

I'm pretty average build, a bit of a chest going on but otherwise relatively normal build, would you recommend the slim fit?
