I toyed with buying one earlier in the year, was £500 for a 1998 with 115k miles and 1 owner from new. Decided against in the end as the consensus here seemed to be against, and not considered as likely to go up in value. But this article is making me question that decision! This particular example does seem a touch expensive though...

Will this model ever be 'coveted'? Don't think so...
If the MK4 is, I'm sure this turd will be.

Bought a 97 golf gti for £300 with mot till feb. Needed 2x engine mounts and 4 shocks, total less than £150.

Top of one door had laquer peel and the odd stone chips on front. Been serviced inc all belts recently. Clean example with only 108k on it.

Sold for £650 to a friend a month later. Could of probably got closer to £900 if I wanted.

Wasn't exactly sporty though.

I would've had that for over scrap value. I don't particularly like these cars but something MOT'd always has a value to me.
I think I got less than the value of the fuel in it biggrin

Really? And how many have you owned to objectively qualify that?

Have you owned and lived with a mk3 GTI?

And how long did you own your mk3 GTI to draw that conclusion?

I ran one for 20 years. I loved it.

She still had plenty of life (and 8 months MOT), but in the end she had to go. I bet not many go the that great scrapyard in the sky looking as good as this:

I actually washed & hoovered it before collection. Still don't know why hehe
How come you didn't sell it or give it away? Was it a victim of the Scrappage scheme?

I knew nobody who wanted her. Couldn't be bothered with tyre kickers
Over in Texas they actually had a scheme where you could donate old cars to charity. Roadworthy stuff found deserving new owners with war veterans etc, the remainder were sent to dismantlers and junkyards. Made people feel good about getting rid of old cars. You could get a tax deduction from it too.

Good call. It was a bit of a drive from Nottingham to Texas though biggrin (Now you've mentioned it I think Oxfam in the UK have a scheme)

I suppose it depends how you define crap

If you mean sold in the millions, fun to drive, quite nippy, virtually unbreakable, long lived, quite economical, quite pretty, loved by its owners, then yes, it's really crap biggrin

This is so bad its almost insulting. "behind all the me-too shouting about cheating, you can't argue with fact that VW makes good cars. And has done so for quite a while." This actually is insulting, do you think were stupid?

Whats in store for next week? Accuse my Grandmother of living off immoral earning before suggesting I should buy a mk4 Escort cab and announcing Pol Pot was just misunderstood?

As far as I remember in America you can donate your old car to charity at much more than its real value for a large tax write off.

Test drove a 16v and a VR6 back to back, they were awful, driven every variant of a MK4 when they were new except the R32, they were awful, if a car drives like a heavy unresponsive dog the for me its a turd, the fact the MK3's were supposed to be hot hatches made it worse, having had two MK2 GTI's in the 80's I couldn't get my head around how bad they were, so no, never owned one because they wouldn't get past the test drive.

How could they drive so differently to the Mk2 when the suspension is basically the same?

Dunno you tell me?

In fairness it was about seven years after the mk2, but it definitely wasn't up to it, my brother was going to buy the car but I went with him, what compounded the problem was we had come off the back of a test drive of a GTI- Pug, that was on another level, he bought a brand new Puma in the end, one of the very first, that too was better in every aspect than the Golfs, the mk2's were a C reg 8 valve, which I learnt to drive in and an E reg 16 v, I lost my love for Golfs after having a go in a 205 GTI, again it made the MK2's feel dull, who gives a st about build quality and a badge, a hot hatch has to be fun and razor sharp for me.

That will be a snide comment on rust, he kept it two years then sold it for a house deposit, or there again who cares how dull a car is as long as it lasts right.

P.S Check out the thread on fun FWD cars, the Puma gets a fair few mentions.
