We need a little runaround and a fabia vrs would be ideal. But it doesn't take too long to spot the oil consumption issue that plagues these engines. I'd be looking at a 2011/12 car which wold still be the CAVE engine so the worst of the lot although it seems that even the new ones aren't great. Apparently 500ml of oil every 600 miles is ok says VAG.
I'd more or less discounted them as too much trouble but there isn't much else out there similar.
Anyone any experience?

We bought a 2011 Fabia VRS when it just 3 months old, and experienced the oil consumption problem. Happily, Skoda replaced the engine at 7,800 miles under warrantee, and it has been fine since then - no oil consumption issue at all. I got the impression that engine changes were being done as a matter of course at the time to solve the issue, so you may well find them out there on the market.

I've a 2013 Leon with the 1.4TSI and in its first 20.000 Kms (13.000 miles) I had only to add less than half a litre of oil, and that was after 4 or 5 months after purchase.
Having heard of all the horror stories before buying the car I was checking the oil every weekend and was quite anxious as it was not going down!!

Ive got the 2.0 tsi from 2012 and goes through oil like petrol, apparently its "ok" though :-) mine does very low mileage and short distances tbf, less than 4k per year mainly 2 to 5 mile trips, occasional blast out when i've got it the weekend.

Am about to P/X my red Polo GTI next week for the new one. 2010, 32k miles and no major issues with high oil consumption.. It does use about a litre every 1500 miles but apparently that it fairly normal for the engine, according to them it needs to be about a litre every 600 miles for them to do anything about it.

To stick up for this engine, I've done nearly 50k in a 2012 Fabia VRS over the last 3 years and while it has used some oil between services it is in no way as dramatic as some. I also had a dodgy spark plug error resulting in bad misfire under load.

In general it has really been no real issue, so there are good ones out there. It's a cracking little engine, shame it seems the manufacture was a little hit and miss.

2010 car. Replacement engine at 5,000 miles followed by EGRV, clutch-pack and other issues. VW customer service disgraceful but dealer honourable.

Wouldn't buy another VAG product in a hurry. Their breathtaking arrogance in relation to the emissions issue doesn't surprise me. Then again I suspect most manufacturers couldn't give a flying monkey's elbow.

By comparison, my 148k mile vehicle uses less than a tenth of that. I'd suggest that it's an issue.

My son's 10 plate Ibiza Cupra has cost him over 2.5k in the last 18 months to get sorted after myriad problems.

A disgracefully inept engine from a horrible car company.

I'd want a Skoda warranty to go near one.

Perhaps in comparison.. But as i said i have had no major problems with the engine so who knows. Maybe some just use more than others.

The R56 Cooper S i had before my Polo used 3.5l within 900 miles and then racked up 6.5k in warranty repairs before i got rid of it 8 months later...

A pint of oil in 600 miles is fine - if your car happens to be a mid 90s Fiesta. I know it's a "feature" of those engines but the consumption is so bad that I'd be concerned about forgetting to put oil into it.

Even though mine hasn't been too bad at all, I do second this. Factor in a fully loaded warranty. The amount of complex tech involved is a bit scary!

To the OP all I would say is the engine and DSG combo are an impressive little package performance wise, but it has that too competent, numb feeling. Coupled with a pretty neutral chassis, very basic sports suspension set-up and a pretty basic, clearly cost efficient cabin it's not a car that would inspire you to put up with any major problems if they did raise their head.

If that sounds like I'm putting down my own car, for the money and willing to accept the compromises mentioned nothing much came close at the time. However if I'd had any major issues, or touch wood not, but in the future I would not bat an eyelid at getting rid, it inspires very little emotional connection.

You'll find that BMW consider a litre of oil every 1500 miles is perfectly acceptable consumption too - ask around and it's not uncommon for M54 30i engines and E39 M5 usage.
Alfa Twinsparks could get through oil that quick as well, as could RX8s

Personally, I'd find it annoying too but a lot of manufacturers wouldn't do much about that sort of consumption other than to tell you to monitor if and keep replenishing it

I had a 2009 scirocco from new, amongst a few other problems it needed a new engine after 12000 miles. That was the 1.4 twin charger unit.

Assuming it's a mk3 Leon, it's a different engine to the one used in the pre-facelift Polo GTI and mk2 Fabia vRs.

It uses the newer EA211 engine rather than the EA111.

It is a shame, the engine and gearbox combo was a good laugh to drive, my friend bought one new, it was every bit as capable as my 220bhp MK1

He had it for about 2 years and had no issues, had to chop it in for something bigger (Octavia vRS) in the end. It did develop a slight judder under acceleration but this was just as he part exchanged it so dont know what it was. They are and will offer a lot of car for the money, it's just a bit risky IMO.

We've got a 1.4TSI ACT 140bhp, no issues with oil consumption, only have to put it in when it's taken out. This is obviously a turbo-only unit.

If you're looking for a run around might be one to consider, Got a Polo BlueGT, nice little car, not as fast as the vRS/GTI but probably more reliable.

Oil consumption in of itself is no issue. PSAs spec for the DW10 is 1 litre/1000km.
