Along comes an affordable, manual rwd coupe.
You'd think it would make people happy. But nope. Back to whingeing and complaining.

I think it looks ace! OK, the grill is way too big. Also not a fan of glass roofs (more weight far away from CoG, no function). But the rest? Mega! Nice clean lines, not the usual mess of creases, fake air intakes and functionless 'aero'. IMO this has a pleasing, non aggressive, 60es sports cars vibe to it. Interior also very agreeable.
Way to go Toyota. Wasn't expecting that. Please make it ?
BTW, press release available here [1] has more info. Definitely a 'four seater'. Hope the rear bench is an option as it doesn't look like even little Gaijins will fit .

Thanks for the press release info. I'm pretty intrigued, I must admit. What platform is this then? Where did that come from!?Way to go Toyota. Wasn't expecting that. Please make it ?

Pleasure! Regarding the platform: not the faintest idea. One would guess that they will want to recycle as much GT86 bits as possible? At least the stuff that isn't expensive. So engine certainly a pretty simple I4 from their range, but gearbox and rest of the running gear eight six?Or what about those rumours that they wanted to join FCA and Mazda on the MX thing? Not sure if I dreamt that .
I'm glad I held off posting in this. My original reaction was that it was gopping.
However I've come back to it several times in the last day or so and actually I really like it.
I doubt I'd be in a position to buy one anyway, but I'd love it to have an interesting engine option. Maybe a turbo'd triple. I guess it will be something from Toyota's parts bin though.

Please god - no turbo!
Hmmm, I know where you are coming from and knowing what you drive I guess that you want the "drivers car" check list... ieNA
RWD
Manual
Low weight
But I'm not convinced NA is a must for this car. We all know that a lot of manufacturers (Mazda aside) have looked to turbos as a way to get under emissions requirements and get good mpg on the test cycles. Having daily driven a small capacity turbo charged petrol engined car for the last 5 years I can tell you that they can be good fun and characterful. Having also driven a fair few miles in a small triple (Citroen C1) they have a distinctive sound that is more interesting than many 4 cylinders. For example, and I'm talking in general to everyone here not directly to you, I heard a Golf R the other day (the go to lease deal fast car of the moment) and it sounds dire. So, so dull.
Of course they could always fit the 1ZR that the 1.6 elise has.
Are we reading much into the interior shots that show the tach with a red line starting at 7k rpm, or do we think that is just for the concept?

Not quite made up my mind about this, but I think I'm with you. If they drop in a 1.5 NA as some reports suggest, this will pretty much be a fixed head ND, Toyota style. That Mazda is very tough competition... And if they put in a bigger NA engine well that leaves no room for the 86. The 3 pot FI might not be a purist's choice -- but it makes a nice warble, gets good results in the tests and usually comes with a nice amount of low end torque. A super combo IMVHO in a light weight car that has to serve as a daily. Plus there is the potential of getting the typical ~ +20 PS upgrade for a few quid with a remap...
But Toyota hasn't anything like this in the pipeline. There is a new 1.2 FI four pot with Otto / Atkinson cycle but not sure we want that. And if they really aim to price the S-FR much underneath the 86, there won't be room for anything expensive. So one of their newer vanilla 1.5 I4 NA jobs most likely.
Regarding the red line in the press pic, I would not read much into it. While the whole car seems to look pretty close to production, the instrument set seems to be a TFT job (cheaper than real dials) so could show anything. There's also a gear indicated (3) in the display, but in the rest of the pics the car is a manual. Hm.
A bit alarming: there's no 'ESP off' switch anywhere in the nicely spartan interior (more I look at it, better I like it!). Can only hope this is accessible over the control thingy they put on the steering wheel or via the 'Mode' button on the centre console.
Sorry, getting carried away here . We don't even know if they will make or even sell it in Europe. But I *really* like the styling. Even prepared to overlook the stupid snout -- bit like with the kink in the Fulvia's bonnet. Looks ste, but does not ruin the rest of the car, perhaps even rather miraculously enhancing it?
I was looking the S-FR up for a few more details and came across the Kikai concept "hot rod", after I laughed I thought- hang on, its actually rather fun. Toyota reliability, bonkers Japanese/American Hot rod fusion looks, small European road compatible size and wheel in each corner entertainment- why not? :-)
Undoubtedly it fails all Health and Safety/crash testing nonsense but I rather like it.
