I know you fancy a Bimmer Dan, but I couldn't ignore this beauty...

V70 T5, reasonable MPG, 250 bhp, loads of space, bit of luxury. What's not to like?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Out of those I'd say the Audi was my favourite, but I can't afford the S4 running costs. Common theme this lol - car cheap enough, running costs not. The A4 Avant 2.0 litre T S line is a good shout though.
Gonna have to go and see a 9-3 and a 3 series to see how big they are as I've previously been focussing on the 5 series or 9-5.
Thanks for the merc and Jag suggestions also, but I'm not keen on the styling of the 2000's era cars. The rounded, softer 'executive' styling isn't what I'm looking for. My favourite car in my 20's was this. I like the aggressive angular styling.

With your budget you can't afford to run a BMW, don't bother with old, nackered ones. Buying it is not the problem.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...
If I were you, I'd go test drive that ST220, you will love it - under the bonnet can be made special too. Perfect fit for you to be honest. I need a car to replace my Astra as a daily hack, and I'd buy that if I was in the UK now !
If I didnt already have a Mondeo, I'm sure the ST220 would be top of the list. I know there will be a world of difference in handling and performance between the ST220 and my diesel zetec, but fundamentally the shape is the same and interior the same. Plus I think they look fairly small cars the Mondeo's. They don't have the aggressive 'presence' on the road compared to some other brands:
I don't really want to get into modifying, just more cost, and it never looks as good as a standard car in a well specced trim level. I think the issue with the Mondeo is it has a small front end. Cars like the BMW and Audi have a large aggressive, flat fronted looking front end.
I like the Audi's actually. Going to have to save up for a bit longer though.

I didn't think audi's would be in budget until someone pointed it out recently. Got to save a bit more still, but certainly has the look that I'm looking for and the power to go with it. That one is a 2 litre TFSI quattro, and it does 31mpg average
Still a 10 year old car though. How are they for reliability and repair costs?

Right Mr Lightbulb,
The time has come to be honest with us all, but most of all, honest with yourself.
You've been round the houses with this, started several threads about it in one way or another.
I thought you wanted an engine to clean and be proud of? Thought you wanted an iconic engine that won't be around again I.e. Bmw n.a 6cyl? Then a while back you were certain it had to be a big 4x4 cause you like the styling. Then BMW cause you like the styling and engine. Then you weren't sure cause of price of parts. Then it's Mondeo ST.
And now you've dismissed the mondeo which is probably the best car for you, in favour of a great lumpen Audi. It doesn't look aggressive, it looks fat. People won't see you in that and think ooh he's doing alright for himself, they'll think oh look he's bought a cheap 11 year old Audi, that'll cost loads to fix. The 2.0 TFSI engine is probably the most unreliable one you could get in that car. And you won't get an average of 31 to the gallon in that either, you just won't.
Don't kid yourself, it's badge snobbery. The Mondeo is great. Get it and screw what your neighbours or friends think, as it'll be more embarrassing when the repo men come to take your house after you've got in loads of debt paying to keep some expensive old German car going.

If my neighbour bought an ST220 I'd be over there like a shot begging to have a go in it. A4's (and 320d's) are like rats. You're never more than 5 metres away from one. Now you could say that about a Mondeo Zetec diesel, but certainly not an ST220.
Anyway, what do you really think is a realistic option for you mate? After all you're supposed to have all the bright ideas Danlightbulb!
