Always had a soft sport for on-one hardtails, my brother built up a 456(50) and whilst it wasn't in anyway light (in fact I'd place it firmly in the "overbuilt" camp) it rode really well. He's recently upgraded to 650b wheels and reckons its a much better ride.
For the price you're getting a decent groupset and ok finishing kit.
Thumbs up from me.

They're very well thought of, there's no escaping that it's ever going to be a super light bike (it's steel after all), but then light bikes don't come with 140mm-160mm forks.

I personally think upgrading to the Revs over the Sektors is a no-brainer, as is going for a dropper post for an extra £160.

I don't think you gain anything much by moving to a Rev over a high spec Sektor.

Adding the dropper is a worthwhile upgrade, but it's not really much cheaper than doing it later if you don't have the cash. Swap the tyres to the On One branded ones though.

As for the bike, they ride lovely, will take anything you throw at it and they're excellent value.

That's some big ass forks on a HT, where are you planning on going with it?

Great feedback so far, thanks. I live in the New Forest so doesn't need to be too "rad". I currently have a Specalized P1 progressive hardtail, which has been good if not a bit heavy. Looking for a bit of an upgrade.

Nowhere other than locally round the forest. Might this be overkill?

No? Lighter and plusher with a better damper for £100 - not to mention they're all black and menacing looking like a mini Pike - you can put a price on that! wink

Just a bit I'd say yeah. I have to try very hard to use 100mm round the forest. 100-120 is all you need and you'll end up with a quicker easier ride out of it.

Trek Superfly, Scott Scale sort of thing I have been looking at. It's 29er territory really but I'm still in two minds about having the nimble handling of a 650b, Oh and I'm a short arse biggrin

I'd love another Rocky Mountain but out of my budget now.

Nah, it's be a laugh - 'over biked' is a much over hyped phrase. If you're thinking of donning the lycra and racing XC it's not the right bike - if you want to have a laugh in the forest it's perfect.

Is there anything noticeable between the damping in an RL Sektor and RLT revelation? I don't thinks there been much between them at all in my limited experience although im not sure exactly which models I've ridden of each. And I doubt there's a noticeable weight difference in use. I'd sooner sell the Sektor and get something like a Mattoc if I wanted a fork upgrade.

This. That frame will feel rubbish with short forks on it. Hard tails are perfectly capable of riding the same places as full sus bikes, my 456 has ridden top to bottom on Old Man of Coniston for example.

The only reason not to get that one is that On One do a carbon version that is much stronger and much lighter. I have one, it's night and day the difference in the ride compared with the gas pipe one.

They work really well with a 160mm fork with travel adjust, something you can knock down for climbs or for pootling about and then wind out again for the fun stuff. The original RS Lyriks with coil u-turn or 2-step air are perfect for this and only a cople of hundred on eBay for a decent used set.

Taking on board the comments about the 140mm forks, I've two other possibles:

Any good? I'm a roadie most of the time, but do enjoy the occasional MTB ride around the New Forest, and I'll be towing my little one round next year too. He's had a seat on the back of my Specailized for the last few years.

As far as I can tell (Rockshox sell a lot of variants so it's hard to keep up sometimes) the Sektor Gold forks have the old turnkey damper - old tech and not great when it was new, the Revs have the motion control which is pretty much current, much better and you can play about with the bottomless tokens if you want to really fine tune them - the latest Revs are pretty much mini-Pike which are arguably the best forks you can get today.

I'm not sure if I'd bin a set of Sektors and spend £400 or whatever on a new set of Revs, but £100 is a non-brainer IMHO.

For £100 more i'd get this

http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m1b65s155p5701/CANNON...

New Forest terrain would really suit a 29er, the Reba is a lovely fork and 100mm is plenty enough. I've ridden most UK trail centres with 120mm and never found myself wanting more. I dont know enough about the difference in framesets between the Trail and the Flash, but assume thr Flash is more xc race geo, but there is one with the lefty fork for the same price

The 45650b is a nice bike but I've had long travel HTs and for most stuff it was a PITA to ride, sure lots of fun going down but hard work on the flats and the ups and the forks (150mm Revs) were way too much even though they were 15mm thro-axles

Cheers Pablo. I'm adverse to getting a 29er, I have a cross bike and I think they'll be too similar. Really want smaller.

I run a steel hardtail with 150mm secktors. And I do mostly "dicking about in the woods". I use full travel pretty much every ride (and indeed had to put a stiffer spring in).

I'm not saying it's wrong but dicking about in the woods is a little different to riding in the New Forest biggrin
