I'm used to the size now -- and the vagaries of OSX (folders and files intermingled).

The hard drive noise irritates me slightly when it wakes up. Only a few seconds but an eery wind like noise. Couldn't work out what it was at first.
Are you sure it's not a fan instead of the hdd? Don't these come with ssd?

Only come with SSD if you configure it that way.

I've not noticed my fan coming on yet, and there's obviously no noise from the SSD in there. Even if it was a HDD version any noise would be drowned out* by the seek/access noise from the disks in my Thunderbay.

  • this drowning out is relative of course, as it's only noticeable when everything else is silent in the office.

It is the hard disk. My study is silent, and the PC this replaces had an SSD and a near-silent hard drive (plus it was under the desk of course).

I kind of like the spinning up of the HDD sound for some reason.

My iMac, hybrid whatever it is called disk, no real noise, quite house. When the fans start up,and that is noticeable, I usually open the activity monitor to see what the memory and CPU are up to. With mine it is usually the BIONC client running in the background getting stuck into some numbers and using the video board. I think?

Well, I'm on cloud9

Didn't realise I'd get a new set of eyes thrown in. Text is just so much nicer to look at. And the images....

My purchase was unplanned as I found a one-off deal at a great price, but I'd say it's the best computer I've ever owned.

Loving it. It makes using my 13" Air away from my home office feel very small....

I've gone from iMac/iPad/iPhone to iMac/MacBook/iPhone, I find that the big desktop/ little laptop combination work well, as when I'm at home I want a big screen and lots of storage, whereas out and about I want a proper operating system in as small a form factor as possible. I would have been happy with a powerful laptop and simple docking station combination, but that was looking like it would be more expensive than an iMac/MacBook set up.

Exactly what i'm thinking - I like a desktop for photo editing and more detailed work.

However when travelling or slumped on the sofa i'm quite happy with a smaller laptop.

Out of interest which book did you go for?

I'm thinking 27" iMac then probabaly a 13" Macbook or more likely an Air although i'd still like retina so may plump for the 12" Macbook.

Unless you need a lot of processing power I'd say go for the 12" Macbook. The only trouble with the 5K iMac is that it makes all other screens look rubbish, so you'll probably want a laptop with retina display rather than the Air.

I went for the 12" MacBook, mainly due to the retina screen. I wanted as small/light as possible, so it was between the MacBook and 11" Air. These days I only really use the iMac for development and photo editing.

It looks like the 12" MacBook has just been updated: http://www.macrumors.com/2016/04/19/new-2016-12-in...

That explains why the "buy" page on the apple website doesn't seem to be working.

Year and a half on for me and the best computer I've ever had by a country mile. It's a joy to use!

My home office has an ancient pc and a docking station for my work laptop, its a paint to switch between them, half a kvm for the k and m and the desktop is plugged into the analogue and the laptop the digital inputs of the 2 monitors.

It drives my wife made when she wants to use the fairly knackered 8 year old Tesco Medion desktop, upgraded over the years but fairly well on its way out.

So, cant have any more than two monitors, was thinking of using a Mac for the the main stuff like Outlook and Lync and possibly haivng my laptop ont he network and RDP'ing to it for connections to stuff on the work network.

Was thinking a 27 with the 1Tb hybrid and 8gb.

way way way too late here, but 4k sucks... on a PC anyhow. hardly any programs scale up the text on windows 10. SO have to reboot in a lower resolution for some programs to be able to read them.

How does this go on a mac? does it deal well with older programs and 4k?

Apple have been pushing HiDPI mode for quite some time now, not only on OS X but also in iOS.

It's pretty much seamless, everything is the sort of size you'd expect, but a lot sharper. Older programs that don't support it are upscaled so that they are the correct size.
