Hi there

I'm travelling to Barcelona from Edinburgh (via London) on Friday to visit my nephew - his iPhone is faulty so I have a replacement battery and a replacement dock connector (small PCB) complete with tools. The guidelines say tools should have a shaft length of no more than 6cm - does anybody know if shaft length excludes the handle? It does look like a small bomb making kit so I want to avoid being tasered on the spot...

Thanks

Tim

I think that you have no chance. Sorry.

You may be right about the regs but the airport guy will just put them in their bin.

The battery will be ok. Perhaps you could just order the tools from Amazon.ES. Your UK login will work.

I'd put that in your hold luggage. I pass through LHR many times a week. It may technically be ok but logic and reason will not work with the security personnel.

They won't let you through with those.

Reminds me of this (stolen from the Geek jokes):

What you can officially carry and what the security womble allows you to take on are two very different things. You have no hope with those.

I had an 8mm AF spanner in my bag the other week that I forgot about. Confiscated because I may take the plan apart apparently!?

Due to a vehicle issue abroad I had to catch a flight back to UK from Europe unexpectedly, I had my daily bag with all sorts of odds & ends in it, that i took as hand luggage I didn't think much about what I had tucked in it, but one of the things was a fairly substantial lock knife, passed the security no probs, I didn't even realise until back in UK.

I'm going to give it a go and see what happens; the Edinburgh airport rules state that you can carry on screwdrivers so long as the shaft is less than 6cm - the shafts are less than 6cm, but I've cut down the handles so the entire length is now less the 6cm just in case. I will print out the "rules" just in case but from experience the security staff don't seem to follow logic/reason. I will tuck them into a side pocket of my bag so hopefully they won't notice them....

Take a copy of the rules, so you can show them. Just in case. wink

It annoys me I can't take my beloved metal pen any more, but I really wouldn't want to lose it. I guess it's not the end of the world if you lose those screwdrivers.

Good luck. I've been stopped with a tiny torch and a few snap-on ratchet rings a couple of years ago. The spanners were too valuable to bin. Liverpool airport had a storage facility I could use to store the tools until I got home. The reason I wasn't allowed to take the spanners were because I was told I may take the plane apart. Seriously?!?!

So far so good; made it through Edinburgh without being stopped - only Gatwick to go...

What's an 8mm AF spanner?
I work at airport with tools. What right royal pain in the bum security is. A recent example was the armed police who go airside had his tomato soup confiscated but was free to carry his Heckler&Koch gun!!!

Obviously not Heinz tomato soup, I would have confiscated it as well.

Sharp instruments that you're not sure you should take or not, you've altered them to make them less likely to be taken off you and concealed them and no bragging that you've got through security. Nice one, hope you've packed some lube if you get caught

Eh? What the hell are you on about? They conform to the rules so what's the problem? "Lub if I get caught" - for what? Taking through something that I'm entitled to? Get a life.

Bragging? no, just updating the thread given people have contributed.

You're the one who said it looks like bomb making kit, in my opinion it seems a bit of a daft thing to be taking on a plane when the world is going mental, hey ho x

edit: 10/10 for updating, in all seriousness there are loads of threads on here that would be better if the OP didn't disappear

You could have that - 5/16 AF is considered the same as 8mm.

It's a valid point that your efforts in altering them could easily be misconstrued.

I had one of these 'confiscated' by Manchester Airport security a couple of years ago.

No option given to put it into hold baggage (as flight was about to close) or store it for me to collect. Just "sorry, sir no tools allowed in hand luggage".

£50 quids-worth of torque driver in the bin. Didn't even have a bit in it.
