Are Range Rovers in fact rubbish?
Discussion
I saw this video today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzQCj-dbgN0 which although made me laugh also got me thinking. Are Range Rovers rubbish? My dad has the same model as the guy in the video and he too has had endless issues from failed air suspension, snapped steering components, oil leaks, the dash board trying to do an impression of the Blackpool illuminations etc. The parts all cost a bomb to replace too. I'm not sure it's just the older models either. A well off chap down the road has a brand new Range Rover that in the year since he's had it has been back to the dealer 6 times for various problems! I'm not doubting their ability off road (although most will be lucky if they ride up a curb) but surely the build quality should be up to scratch?
I had one of those. No problems. It's just turned ten years old and I know the current owner. And the previous owner.
Nothing big. A radiator leak which was fixed under warranty and a couple of compressor seals which cost bugger all to sort at a specialist.
So no, I don't think they are in fact rubbish.

Again no. I know loads of long term Range Rover owners. The only one with recurring serious trouble was the one with an LPG installation to the BMW V8 which died one day and refused to run properly ever again.
The rest are great cars. Not ideal for someone with no money because they were never supposed to be run on Ford Fiesta budgets, but they do what they do and they do it well and in comfort.
You'll find loud and upset owners of Friday afternoon cars from all manufacturers. The more equipment and features a car has the more chance there is of failure.
I know one pair of bumpkins who seek out cars with manual winding windows because electric windows are "just something to go wrong". They did break the handle off their manual windows a year or so back and are less vocal now.

No, I have had 5 range rovers of various types and with the exception of one they have been faultless.
Just got rid of the last one and that ran for 8 years from new in my ownership and just needed servicing and consumables despite regular abuse.
Great Cars that people seem to love trying to pretend they are not.
Just don't mention the P38 though, they deserved their reputation from my experience.

Ex colleague is now a salesman in JLR dealership. He generalises customers into two very broad categories, the problem children are more likely to be the ones who don't look after the vehicle properly, those who look after them, check levels, drive with mechanical sympathy, even if spirited progress made, generally don't have issues. Obviously there are some who break the mould, but he reckons he can tell based on the state of their trade in which will be the pita. Obviously hearsay and completely unscientific.
Although I've driven them and been around them since the classic came out I've never actually owned one, so I can't say from personal experience.
However, my perception is that when it's running well a Range Rover is a wonderful thing - i.e not rubbish at all. When they have troubles, and some do, then they can be expensive and tiresome to fix.
With so many good alternatives I've never felt the need to take that chance - still like them though.

Having looked on a few consumer websites it seems as if either nothing goes wrong, or everything does. But this article is quite interesting although it is from 2012 I hasten to add! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179067/La...

Here we go again - another 'I hate SUVs and can't see the point' thread.
Far from it. It's about the reliability of Range Rover cars. Nobody has mentioned them in their form as an SUV except you.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
