Coincidentally enough, I reviewed this a couple of weeks ago and only uploaded last night (not to sell - just a review of the model):

Not the quickest out there but still pretty shifty. Interior was very sporty however - lots of black and red!

I'm sure it's a perfectly good car, but I'm not sure I could suggest a diesel Golf is a sports car!

I don't get the idea that a Golf is a great 1 car proposition. If you don't have a family, get a sports car. If you do, you'll want something bigger that ALSO drives better (e.g. 3 series touring).

E90 M3 if you can find one at that money!

Otherwise, the 335i Touring is a good shout.

Neither is a sports car. But the OP does not want a sports car. He wants a saloon / estate with decent handling, a bit of feedback and lots of poke. Handling and feedback requirements rule out Audis.

The suggestion of a diesel Golf made me cry.
I agree with ORD and the previous post. You don't want a sportscar, OP. Your mission brief is squarely in the realms of "super saloons" or fast wagons. Maybe big hothatches or rally reps although the latter might be tiresome for proper family use.

An M3 isn't a sportscar. It's a well-sorted BMW 3-series compact executive saloon.

How about something 30 years old with a Ferrari engine?

Or a Maserati with 100k on the clock?

Seriously, when you are trying to wrestle a bawling, wriggling sprog into a car seat in the pissing rain, you'll value wide opening doors, a huge boot and wipe clear door trims for when he kicks them more than 35 profile P Zeros, polished walnut and quad exhausts. My view is shared with one of the earliest posts - 2.0 Ecoboost Titanium X Focus / Mondeo / S-MAX. From personal experience I can tell you that the SMAX is quick, a decent, engaging drive and a fantastic family car. OK, so it's a big bus, hence you may choose a Mondeo or Focus but they make a great compromise between family car tedium and sports cars that don't do "practical".

Every child is different (my 2 have had the same treatment but are very different!) and maybe I've just been lucky - but my interiors haven't been wrecked.

There was a line of tiny splatters from breast milk up a side window once (feeding in a layby) and they seem to gather pine needles in the rear footwells like you wouldn't believe, but they haven't actually damaged any of our cars.

I keep reading that young children kick and scream and trash cars but that hasn't been my experience... so I wouldn't avoid nice interiors on that basis. I agree about proper doors though. I *can* fit all 4 of us in my Cerbera. I *wouldn't* want to carry out that performance penned in to a narrow space in Tesco's carpark in the rain.

335 might be a good shout, if he finds an M3 at that budget, I wouldn't buy it tbh. There'll be something badly wrong with it.
Aye, highly unlikely for an M3, but 335i is definitely a contender. Will look for a test drive in one.

Depends how much pace you need but might be worth trying a 330i as well, reputedly less troublesome engine wise.

I'm biased and not had my 330 long but really enjoying it, for the budget/running costs etc can't yet think of a fun 4 door family car I'd rather have. (Well perhaps an rx8 but I wasn't brave enough)
