In response to the best hot hatch ever thread.

This is bottom of the hot hatch pile for me:

Terrible weezy 8v engine, poor to drive and questionable reliability and build quality.

The VTR was more of a 'warmish' hatch.

The VTS was the quicker version, but still a pretty average/poor hot hatch.

As a hot hatch package, the corolla t sport is pretty woeful in standard trim.

It rides high, with disproportionately small wheels and dull looks. Great car with a few mods though.

I read the title and that Mk4 Golf GTI was instantly in my head. Cant think of many others that got the idea of a hot hatchback so wrong. I suppose their one good point has been the 1.8T for conversions into the older Golfs. Scrap the rest.

Was actually a fine handling hatch with a decent amount of power, well the 2 litre ones were, just tended to rust and wasnt the prettiest.

To be fair they weren't that bad, we had two growing up, a B & F reg from new. They were almost as fast as contemporary 8v Golf GTI's, but boy did they rust!

Proudly badged EFI on the back - electronic fuel injection!!

I always thought the 1st gen Civic Type S just looked like a special edition trim... I've never driven one, so can't comment properly, I'm basing it purely on looks.

My hot hatch, the Corsa 1.8 SRi, (2003), was always derided by all and sundry, including JC and the motoring press. But to me it was a stellar machine, with bowel loosening acceleration and ICE including radio, cassette and five disc changer CD. I miss Kevin, for that was his name, terribly.

Yes, these handled pretty well

Suspect on a lot of posts on here the driving impressions will be based on a 20 year old version running on knackered shocks with a different flavour remould on each corner.....

.....and it being compared to a 15 plate Golf R

I suspect more posts will be based on not having driven the cars in question at all. smile

And quite roomy, especially on the back!

I agree, I always take these kinds of questions to mean "fresh out the box, or close enough".

On that basis, an 8v Mk4 Golf is certainly a strong candidate for my vote.

Lucky to have owned a very long list of hot hatches starting with XR2 / XR3i / Alfa Sud Ti / Delta GT i/ Astra GTE in the early 90's with all sorts of hot hatches in between - more recently things like Golf Gti DSG, Cooper S works, Civic Type R's.

Worst one was a Corolla T Sport - the worst gearing I have ever had in a hot hatch, soft wallowing suspension zero feel through the steering wheel and the seats were too high and lacked any side support - Toyota made some great cars but that was not one of them!

At least the mk4 had a nice interior. The mk3 was fat, slow and had the dullest interior i have ever sat in. Even lada interiors had a bit of character, the mk3 golf interior had no redeeming features.
