Throughout my formative years my father always said he would "Never buy a Ford" never questioned it and don't know what brought him to this conclusion. He never bought a Ford and, as far as I can recall, none of his sons have ever bought one either! This came to mind recently when, after some appalling customer service I decided I would never buy another Mercedes Benz.

Anyone made any similar decisions and, if so, what makes?

Citroen/Peugeot/Renault and maybe Fiat. I'd happily buy/lease a brand new one for the period of the warranty but that's it. OK the reliability is flaky but the French go another level of stupid in some component design necessitating huge costs.

Never say never but there are some companies that I just don't gel with so "probably" wouldn't buy. For example I doubt I'll ever go for an Audi. They make good cars but every one I've driven has been a let down from a driving point of view. (I'm excluding the S and RS versions). They are expensive but never seem to drive anywhere near as good as the equivilant BMW at that price point. In fact, when I take a pool car from work, the Mondeo is a better drive than the A4 although not as good a package from a quality point of view.

There's a lot of people who are very pro one make and anti another but I've always judged each car on merit. I know people who only buy Ford and would never consider a Vauxhall and vice versa. I'm not that biased.

Never say Never....

There's no sensible reason to avoid any brand, but for daft/irrational reasons my current list is:

I'd currently not buy a Mercedes as my parents and brother have recently bought one, so it would look like I was copying them.

I often fancy buying a Land Rover product (Disco or Range Rover) but would be worried by reliability reputation.

I'd like a Porsche but would spend too much time worrying it would be scratched/tyres slashed when parked, despite probably being worth a fraction of previous cars I've had.

A Lotus Elise because people would laugh every time I tried to extricate myself from the driver's seat.

Alfa Romeo (see Land Rover)

Not really no. My purchases are made on the engineering merits of the individual car itself rather than the badge on the front. If Hyundai release a snorting V8 muscle coupe or Perodua make a monstrous live-axle off-roader then I'll be all ears.

Actually I forgot Vauxhall. Never say never but I'd take a lot of convincing based on everything they've made over the last two decades (Monaros don't count, I'd have one of them in a flash).

This, except Fiat isn't a 'maybe'. Add Dacia to the list too.

I'll admit to an irrational dislike of Ford's. My parents always had them and my memory of nearly every childhood holiday is of them breaking down and spending hours waiting for the AA. It is irrational because I'll fully admit that it would be very unfair to call modern ones unreliable.

Would be very unlikely to buy VAG as they're the only manufacturer I've known where friends have had complete lemons. Unscientific I know but there are also a lot of stories on here of bills running into thousands for relatively new cars. Even the people who are happy with them often seem to have replaced a list of components as long as your arm.

But as above never say never, I think if you're in the market for a car it would be stupid to rule out any manufacturer completely. Individual models not so much.

I think sometimes a manufacturer, who previously I had no interest in, produces a car that not only piques my interest, but appeals more simply because of who made it (if that makes any sense? biggrin). A prime example is a Lexus ISF - I have never seen any appeal in owning a Lexus, but the ISF appeals greatly precisely because it seems to go against the grain

I can't see the likes of any Bugatti Veyrons or Lamborghini Aventadors in your previous car list! What amazing machines are you referring to?

I don't think there's any Brand I'd not consider buying, however I'm never, ever buying another car with frameless windows without having the ability to put it under cover when it ices over. I just want to be able to get into my car!

I would agree with the 'Never say Never' sentiment when a manufacturer can surprise you at any time. However when the manufacturer themselves ruin the experience with terrible service isn't it a case of leopards and spots? My Merc is actually a good car - CLS Shooting Brake but customer service is S**T

If the service you're getting is bad then why not swap dealer/garage?

Never say never, although I don't see the appeal in owning a Citroen at the moment. But who knows that might change in 10 years....

VW...because I just find them very bland to look at and they have a pretty boring engine line up too...appreciate we have had a Audi though.paperbag

Most manufacturers have at least one appealing car in the range.

Never fancied a Trabant however.
