...and here's the twist -
You've probably all seen the Lethal Weapon films and the Beverly Hills Cop films; fairly serious plots and stories but fused with lots of banter and wit from the characters.
I've been reading Jim Butcher's Dresden Files of late, which pretty much has the above in spades, but I've reached the end of the series, so I need something else to get into.
Only criteria is that the books need to be at least reasonably well written

Maybe not quite so serious plots, but I enjoyed a few Les Norton novels back in the day. Consider him a bit of an Ozzie Terry McCann.

Google Charles Stross' Laundry Series.
They're a slightly tongue-in-cheek Ian Fleming meets HP Lovecraft meets Stoker/Shelley meets an IT helpdesk geek (with nods to all sorts of other novels...), but they're well written pseudo-crime/thrillers and very hard to put down.
The one criteria they might not meet is your "serious plots" mandate...unless you count working out where the concrete cows in Milton Keynes are coming from...
