If you think your Rear main seal is leaking oil, how long should you leave it before getting it changed (car's 6 years old and no warranty)?

Indeed.

It has a habit of taking the clutch with it.

When you get it looked at, ask whoever does it to check for oil contamination. Additionally, you may consider getting the clutch done at the same time to save labour charges. Its very easy to do whilst the RMS work is being carried out.

Where would the oli drip be found? I can't get right under the car to see it's coming from.

Back of the engine.

If the car is garaged, stick a tray under it and you'lll soon see.

It's about 6" before the axle line. It does not drip everyday and there's only drips in my garage, but non in the space where I park at work. The drip's about 1/4" in size with a black dot in it's centre.

Does a small RMS leak really get to the clutch. I have a big Healey that had a leaking RMS for about 5 years. Just had the egine out (for other reasons) and the clutch has no oil on it.
Any expert opinion on this?

Just been under the car and the RMS joint is as dry as a bone. The oil is coming from were the drive shaft goes into the gear box.

So what does a non-OPC specialist charge for a 996 engine rebuild? I guess it depends on the damage to heads etc... BUT anyone got any ideas?
You can buy a 98 996 private for 24K
a garage might want 30 - 33 for same car.
garage MIGHT give peace of mind BUT is it worth 6 - 9 k?

Have a hunt for some of Ninemeisters posts. IIRC he said it is difficult to buy the internal parts for a rebuild and at the moment buying a whole new engine is actually quite reasonable.
