Hello,

I was thinking about a Golf mk6 GTD as my next car however the prices are a bit higher than I expected, and anything low miles(ish) is commanding an additional premium.

My budget was about 12-13K however I now see Leon FR 184's below 15K. Is it worth the financial stretch to the newer MQB platform Leon?

So basically, 2012 Golf GTD 50K miles v 2014 Leon FR 184 20K miles.

I'll likely keep it for 3 years and 50K miles. Also the Golf engine is the one affected by the emissions problem the Leon engine is not? Is that correct?

It's definitely worth the stretch to an MQB platform car IMO. I had a MK7 GTD and it was a fine car, and plenty quick enough, if a little gruff at times.

I've got a Mk7 GTD and previously had a Mk6, but in your position I would definitely be looking at the newer Leon! The MQB chassis is a big step forwards, and yes like you say it won't be impacted by the emissions stuff.

The standard Mk7 GT TDI might be worth a look too. Quick enough with 150PS, plusher interior than the Leon and available from around £12k

Go for the newer platform. It's lighter than the Mk6 and you'll probably find even the 150ps Leon/Golf 7 will be on par with the performance of the Golf 6 GTD.

It will feel like a younger more agile car too.

I've got the 184FR Leon and it's just great. Simply great. Fast, economical (same consumption as a 150, generally. That's if you care! Mines averaged about 50MPG from new, 2 years ago...) handles brilliantly (smart front "diff" and multi-link rear suspension).
Looks MILES better than a Golf in my opinion too.
Might not use such expensive materials for interior trim as VW (and if that matters the Audi A3 beats both), but for fun and value for money get a Leon FR. Loads out there with some good specs.
Hope you enjoy the search, and the car when you get it
