Murcielago exhaust, Heat shield? Yes/No?
Discussion
I took the plunge & bought a 2007 roadster e-gear, which is being refurbed at PF Autos in Stoke. (see thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Some of you regulars have mentioned about sports exhausts on the Murci, and also the 'heat shield'
As part of the strip-down/re-build/re-spray, I've bought a Larini system (incl sports cats). During the strip-down its amazed me how massive the standard back-box is on the Murci. Looks like a sideboard has been inserted in there.
I'm wondering if the heat shield can be left off to reveal the Larini? or if the heat shield is a 'must have'? I recall also seeing a comment on a thread that the heat shield can be cut down in size, & refitted as a smaller less cumbersome unit?
Any thoughts? any personal experiences? or photos of examples would be appreciated. (photos attached for reference)

Looks epic.
Can only think of this as a reference - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy_itaW9C1A&sns... but I have absolutely no personal experience.

Have to agree, although the factory exhaust back box is massive the heat on the larini will be more concentrated as it is smaller in surface area. The tg point of the resin where it starts to melt or turn soft is probably in the 150-190c range I used to work with carbon epoxy resins quite a bit .... My best advice is leave it as is with the heat shield on. Shame as it is a lovely looking exhaust ...
Hi,
I have a specialist exhaust fitted (not as nice as the Larini I have to say but I wrapped mine in titanium exhaust wrap. I also made a new exhaust heat shield in carbon fibre. I started the car up for the first time in a few weeks due to other work and I have to say the wrap works well,I can put my hand on top of the carbon fibre and it is no hotter than warm. This also takes the heat way from all of the sensors etc..

Interesting! Is your heat shield something you actually made yourself? Does this also mean you've not refitted the massive box cover/heatshield on the rear of yours? The titanium wrap/carbon fibre being 'non-stock'... are products I've not come across for DIY purposes. All seems very bespoke as I assume such is not readily available to the average Murci owner?

Yes,
Made by myself in aluminum and covered in carbon fibre, not a wrap! The original heat shield was missing I assume at the same time of the previous owner fitting the sports exhaust. Photo attached. I think you can see it OK. just refitting the rear panel as I have also made new rear light brackets in moulded carbon fibre. If you go onto Amazon they sell the exhaust wrap. Buy 2 inch so you get a 1 inch overlap each revolution.
