Finally after what seems like a long time deliberating over one of these, i managed to get out on a testdrive. The first drive is always difficult to evaluate in a new car on unfamiliar roads, but my main concern is just how bad the gearbox is!! It felt so slow and reminded me of a 2003 M3. I can imagine that in AUTO mode it would be unbearable. What do owners think?

The gearbox gets better with each production year.

How old was the car that you test drove?

How does the aventador gearbox compare to its competitors :- F12, 458, 911, 650s?

It's a single clutch box and those are dual, old tech v new tech, you decide !

Its fine if you drive hard especially corsa but its probably too aggressive for road, any other style its bad and cold is painful, latest version is ok but not in the league of a decent modern gearbox. Huracan box is amazing by comparison.

drive it like the old M3, lifting the accelerator between changes and it is absolutely fine.

i've done 45k in e-gear cars ( mainly the superleggera ) and :

1. it does take practice
2. it's still no good for tight manoeuvres and city stop-starting

no problems at all when i've driven various aventadors

It was my biggest disappointment with the Aventador. If they put the Huracan box in it I'd have another tomorrow. The story behind Lambo using the gearbox to give it soul is cobblers, they used the single clutch because a double clutch system won't fit in the tub!
The Huracan on the other hand!

It's fine at speed but around town think Ferrari 599 or F1 430, you need to drive around its weakness's.

Agree 100% with this. I also think the gearbox is a huge disappointment. Manual or huracan frankly! (Which of course means Murci or earlier before someone feels the need to point it out!)
