I have had a cheap 'Hanvon' ebook reader for about 5 years. Unfortunately this week I dropped it in the bath so I'm in the market for a new reader. There seem to be a lot to choose from at every price point and I'm a bit lost so I'm looking for some recommendations.

The best thing about my old one was it's ability to display anything that was thrown at it - txt, epub, pdf whatever. I'd ideally like that ability in my new one. I don't really have a budget; if the expensive ones are significantly better I'll happily pay given the amount of use I'll get out of it.

In all honesty, unless you want a backlight, if you want something that shows all formats and don't want to faff about too much, I'd get a Sony PRS1 off ebay. Sony dropped out of the market a year or 2 back but I've had mine for 3 years or so without an issue (only occasional use now). Kindle dominates the market, so probably worth your while looking at those and seeing if that suits, if you want brand new.

Can anyone recommend one with a backlight that's not very big?

I currently use an old iPAQ which is perfect, but being 15 years old the battery is a bit crappy. I use it 90% of the time for reading in bed and I'll often fall asleep readinglaugh

Some of the ones I've seen are bloody massive - the iPAQ is about the size of a mobile phone, so anything a little bit bigger would be great.

Probably better asking in the computers and gadgets thread tbh.
