Our lovely city council clearly is not going to be happy until it has completely banned cars from Newcastle by the looks of things. Not content with the bus lanes that they have painted down Mosely Street, I go out for my daily swim today to find they have also bus-laned Dobson Street.

When will those complete tossers realise that in a city like Newcastle, this achieves nothing other than raises congestion.

Why dont they just ban cars altogether, they may as well, because at this rate, its going to be truly horrific to come into the city by car.

Congestion never used to be that bad in Newcastle, but this stupid council has made darn sure that it will be in future. I'm just waiting for the day when they paint buslanes down St James Boulevard, no doubt they'll end up on the Redheugh bridge as well, and no doubt the High Level bridge will be completely closed to cars permanently.

Its almost as bad as what the f**kwits have done in Gateshead, that place is a nightmare now as well.

To add insult to injury, half of the time that tossers driving the buses dont even use their dedicated lanes. These lanes are actually "No car" lanes, therefore i REALLY wish that anything that isnt a car would get the f**k out of our lanes Of course, if you are in a car and you dare to put one wheel on the "no car" lane then the bus drivers will blast their horns and shout abuse. Tossers!

Just to add, that if I was like many forum posters on this forum who have a "weekend" car and a daily hack, if I was personally in that situation now, I would make my daily hack a van. They are "no car" lanes after all, and they could do nothing about you using it in those lanes as far as I can tell.

I'm sure traffic flow is of absolutely no concern to the highways officers. In fact the quicker the whole city comes to a complete standstill, the sooner they can slap on congestion charging.

Truth is the highways officers can't come up with these 'improvement' schemes quick enough. Have to get them commissioned before year end you see, make sure they spend right up to the allocated budget otherwise it gets cut the following year....

...too many people with their own agendas

Do you know if the no car lanes are 7am-7pm like the rest?

That comes in quite handy when traveling through the city at 7.30pm - my own private express lane Seriously though, councils are out for one thing - to fk the motorist. I detest Gateshead council more than anyone else, the only thing Gateshead is good for is to cross through on the way to Newcastle, but I'm sure they are trying to get visitor numbers up by classing waiting cars at red traffic lights as a parked up sightsee'er.

If we all do that they'll just pedestrianise it like Dean Street.

Thats just it though, 99% of people still wouldnt do that. Anyone who wants to stick two fingers up would do it though.

I didnt realise Dean Street was being pedestrianised?

Yup - as you go down past the turning for the side (where the back of the vermont is) Its paved all the way round to the mini roundabout by the look of it. I think they are still going to let busses through. This will of course kill those nice brick/cobbles they have just put down.

I think they are only widening the path to the Quayside Bar.

I love it I drive over the Swing Bridge each day, and it's a right laugh going backover it on an evening since they got rid of the mini roundabout next to Chase. I have to drive past the Akenside down past the Preimer Lodge and then back back onto the lower Quayside Road to get over the Swing Bridge.

Dean street is pedestriainised half way down and the High Level is shut. Don't you love driving in Newcastle? Saying that it is now an excuse to leave the car over night or the weekend in town and go out on the drink.

They're dualling the whole thing. Finished in 2007
Can't happen quick enough for me, it's like driving across a ploughed field.

My understanding is that lane is to continue down the quayside, and that there will be some type of lane to enable you to go over the Swing Bridge.

Dont worry about it. I work for a certain radio station in Gateshead and the journey into work is a pain in the ar$$e.
Give it a few years and city centres will be like Ghost towns, The local trader will loose so much £££ they will move out and relocate.
Whatever the councils do nobody will ever give up their car
I completely agree with the comments about Gateshead council being a waste of space. I think between Newcastle and Gateshead they have bought a traffic light factory or someone got the order wrong

I've just driven through the main town today and what the hell are they doing?

They've closed the entrance to the central motorway from the Swan House roundabout, made the route from St. Mary's towards Pilgrim st. no-car lanes, 20mph limits everywhere (although at a guess I'm assuming they are un-enforceable - there are no 20 limit signs on lamp-posts, only on the ground), parking charges have gone up as have bus prices (along with major route changes). The quayside is pretty much closed off with all the work been done to Dean Street. Scotswood road is a nightmare...

I'm almost glad that Uni is finished shortly and I don't have to go back to town!

the ones off the swan house roundabout are bus and taxi lanes, not no-car lanes unfortunately, which does jack all for improving anything. buses and taxi's get to the traffic lights quicker, while car drivers end up sitting stuck behind vans and trucks slowly getting poisoned to death by diesel fumes...

I hate newcastle now... I'm planning on moving out

I might buy myself a bus as a regular runaround.

I wonder if a land rover station wagon is classed as a bus if it has 7 seats in

Seriously though, a bit of protesting is in order - who fancies doing a bus lane sit-in. Get a flask of tea, hi-viz jacket and a road closed ahead sign. Picnic chair right in the middle of the lane and refuse to budge for anyone.

I'm just glad that my commute into town only involves going up St James Boulevard then onto Percy Street, at least I avoid all of this madness.

I actually hope that Newcastles economy is damaged by this, people will probably choose the Metrocentre now instead. Although even that is getting bus laned in places, but at least they have actually expanded roads to fit them in and not just take road away from drivers.

Very rare I drive into Newcastle centre in the car anymore - Waaaaaaaaaaaay to much hassle! Luckily have the van for work and make full use of the no car lanes! Luckily dont have to work in the centre itself too often! Though did have a good laugh at a traffic warden telling me I couldnt drive my van down what he called a Bus Lane. I had to walk him back down the street to show him where it said NO CAR!
