Don't worry Gareth, I'm not going for it.
I need 'usable' power and don't want to be rebuilding every few 1000 miles. I have enough of that with my other race cars!
Definitely going the supercharged route for a variety of reasons:
1. Smoother & lower speed idle (few cooling issues)
2. Less extreme internals (charger gives the power)
3. Linear power delivery
And I can write 'Supercharged' on the bodywork

Well, I'm on target to go about 8k over what I was originally going to spend if that's what you mean.
The thing is, all those bits that I thought I'd save money on went out of the window, as the factory stuff is miles better.
The seats for example, I was going to put in some Sparco's or similar but after seeing the strength and quality of the Ultima ones - well, out came the cheque book!
The engine, "of course 350hp is enough" - errr... no actually - the madness creeps in and you then find yourself buying something that can stop the earth from rotating as you roar off up the road!
Next thing I know is that I'll end up with a Hewland sequential 'box with tiptronic activation
Seriously though, I can't go too mad with the box but it has to be strong enough to take the power. I hadn't considered the Getrag before really (as it was twice the price), but looking back, I could have then gone for a central shifter. Still, not to worry, I'm happy with the gearchange on the right and I've got the linkage for the Porsche unit now so G50 it is.

The answer isn't "how much", but "how many times". I think he's running about double what he was talking about when we went to see Ted.
When he was ordering the first stages, he was saying:
"I'm just going to go for a fairly standard engine. 350BHP is more than enough for a car this light."
"I might just go for the standard brakes. If they can stop a Granada, they'll be able to stop this car, which has half the weight."
Now he's going for 600BHP supercharged, and he's bought every possible option for the car.
Initial budget: "Oh, it'll cost me about £30k or so."
Current budget: "I think it's going to be about £200 under the 60 grand mark."
Cars. Don't ya just love 'em

It sounds like most Ultima builders go down the same route. Its a shame that stig did not get the American Speed supercharged 700bhp engine. I think he wimped out on that one. Locost- 69 bhp=no, Ultima - 350bhp=no, Ultima 525bhp (more than you need)=no, Ultima 600bhp=brown smoke, Ultima 700bhp= ring Pampers.
350bhp sounds good at the factory, then you ask why not 400, then 450 oh sod it 500.
I started out with 350Bhp firmly planned. My can-am now has a 526Bhp american speed engine and goes like stink!
I used a 4 speed Porsche box for extra strength with a ZF diff, gives me 60mph in 1st and 212mph in 4th and can wheelspin right up to 100mph!
Only question is why write supercharged on it? who's ever going to get close enough to read it?

The only reason that I haven't looked at the 700bhp option is that... I didn't know there was one
Ignore James as he thinks I'm sitll building a Locost
I'm not completely mad. The car must be reasonably driveable on the road otherwise it's more of a pain than a pleasure. Having 700-800-1000 bhp is all well and good, but if you have to stop every 15 minutes when stuck in our all-too-common traffic queues to avoid overheating then it's pointless.
The 'Supercharged' sticker was a joke btw!
It's all pub talk anyway as I've kept up with a 500bhp GTR round Donington in the Locost! Mincemeat on the straight but up his arse round the twisties.

ME That is if I get the head mods done this winter. I liked the look of the exhaust headers at the SE/Southern meet yesterday so that could help.
They were fitted to my GTR one sunday afternoon. Look nice equal lenght ( Exactly ). But nice guy, has only took 14 Months to do one set !!
